Since it is not a refrigeration unit I assumed it would take some time to get cold. I plugged it in Saturday morning (I also bought the power brick) and let it rum. Since I was not sure if it would really get cold I placed a thermometer inside so I could check. The temperature in the living room was about 74 degrees. By Sunday evening the cooler registered at 30 degrees.
I packed the cooler with soda cans and water bottles chilled in the refrigerator. Also, some cut up veggies etc.. Other than the time the unit was unplugged during transport between the car and the hotel room it was running 24/7 for 7 days counting the two before I left. The unit gave no problems while running in the car and the power brick never got more than warm to the touch. Never hot.
I used the cooler exactly the same way on the return trip. The only problem I ever had was that some of my cut up veggies froze in their plastic container box. They actually had visible frost on them and were stuck together. All-in-all, I found the unit very convenient to use. It will be in the back seat of the car on any future trips around the country.
EDIT: One thing I should add. During my stay in Houston the unit ran 24/7 for 9 days using the power adapter.
This is just right. It is perfect for me as a trucker.
Now I can keep tv dinners, pot pies, etc. cool. This along with the Hot Logic Mini Stove/Oven means I don’t have to keep going into the store to heat up food. I can cook it in the truck and save money on groceries at my local grocery store.
Leave room for air to circulate around the fans. If the outside fan gets blocked, the heat exchanger will burn out in short order. If the inside fan gets blocked, it will not be able to cool efficiently and may ice up easier.
These are nice coolers and will last you a long time as long as you take care of them.
Power clearly reaching the unit. It's the third such failure in less than 5 years. It's under warranty, so let's hope we get a replacement - maybe.
Then, eventually, a 'grudging' email received from Coleman: an extraordinarily complex 'process' to return it: photographs, incident ID numbers to be written on the unit in indelible ink, then photographed again, then my receipt (from Amazon) had to be photographed with the ID number (what's wrong with the name and address and receipt) - again. Al in all 2 hours' work Coleman generated.
No apology for the inadequate quality of this goods, which ruined part of a 6000 mile road trip.
Finally, THERMOELECTRIC units are a waste of time and money: they have a high power consumption and barely cool the goods.
So, either pay for a proper 'fridge compressor unit - or just buy a coolbox to put ice into (and not Coleman's).
Hits 30° running the pre-chill in the house. Had to get a thermometer to keep constant track of the temperature. But now I totally trust it.
