Field use. It took this cm with me fishing and sparked it up right on the ground at the dirt parking lot as most fishing access areas are. This cm makes some really good coffee and is sturdy to use anywhere. It wasn't windy so I cannot speak to us ability to heat up in colder conditions. The carry case is designed well and functions as it should. I wouldn't go shoving a ton of stuff in with the cm but a bunch of filters can fit in the carafe and coffee can also be tucked in there somewhere. Gas canister sits in a mesh pocket and stays secure. Really quiet except for the usual gurgling sounds that are music to any coffeeholics ears. The temperature of the carafe after about 15 minutes of the heat bring of is still pretty warm. It's not burn your skin warm but acceptable coffee temp.
Over all, the initial set up and use so far seems pretty great. No complaints but after a bunch of uses I will review again.
So if you are going to be no where near electric or Dunkin donuts or Starbucks and need coffee like I do, get this unit. It is worth it. Price it out in the off season to save some coin and look for the combo pack with steel carafe and case.
It uses 3.5 inch base, 8-12 cup basket filters. It doesn't currently say that in the instructions, it is been briefly mentioned by one or two reviewers but that's the reality. Even at a drug store, these are really inexpensive for a 100 pack, that should get you through a season or two. I do appreciate the transport case for it but would advise raising the base with a few wooden shims to get the bottom reflecting plate further from the table surface when brewing. It does get hot and will melt a plastic table cloth if not raised. (all the silver metal pieces get HOT when brewing - be careful!)
To sum it up ... not for back packing! But it is excellent for hunting or camping or just loafing in the country. As often as possible, use it in open air. The propane creates carbon monoxide - it needs air to vent it away. I suppose you could use it once in the morning inside a cabin but ... be careful.
It makes a great cup of coffee, and it does it easily. Not inexpensive but it is possibly the best back country coffee maker - evah!
