I bought my Coleman5 at my local grocery store in the scratch and dent section for $5. The spigot, which I understand from the reviews here is pretty fragile, was already gone before I bought the water carrier.

An email to Coleman gained me a free replacement spigot, which didn't surprise me after a history of fabulous interactions with their customer service.

I bought a flat, low-profile cap for an interim solution as well as to have a more durable closure for storage and transportation. A cap which fits perfectly is the wide-mouth cap for the smaller (16oz) sized Nalgene bottle. This is not the commonly found wide-mouth size, and it's not a narrow-mouth cap. The complete 16oz bottle costs around $9, but I was able to buy a replacement lid from REI for about $3. The blue color that it came in is a nice match for the Coleman blue. (See pic.)

The Reliance Aquatainer replacement spigot will not fit the Coleman5.

I really wanted to like this product. After suffering through continuous leaking with the Reliance 7-Gallon containers, I was thrilled to find a product that didn't leak when set on its side for dispensing. The first disappointment was the terrible plastic taste it imparts to the water. No problem, I thought, I'll just use it for camp cleanup duties, refilling it with tap water from the bigger Reliance containers to wash dishes, brush teeth, etc.(we now use a Rubbermaid dispenser for drinking water). Until the second trip, when the vent cap broke from its keeper strap. Now I had to keep track of that every time we used it. Well, we just returned from a 3-week camping trip in Baja California and on the second morning of the trip, the spigot handle just broke off in my wife's hand as she was turning it on. The container is now completely useless 5 months after we purchased it and on only its third use.

It really is discouraging to see these manufacturers come up with useful ideas and designs only to outsource the manufacturing to the lowest bidder, who apparently could not give a whit about its usefulness in the real world. Somewhere, it seems, some brilliant bean-counter has decided that the "average" consumer will not pay the added 12.687 cents that would be required to make it profitable to manufacture this product to a standard that actually makes it useful.

But wait! I just looked at the title of the product! It's called the "Coleman Water Carrier". I guess it succeeds at that . . .

This is by far my favorite camping addition this year. Each year I try to find items that will improve my camping experience. Last year we went to Mammoth Lakes (Twin Lakes) the campground did not have a dish washing station. I have since learned that this happens at many campsites. Often times you are required to wash your dishes at your site- we were not prepared for this so it made dish washing very difficult. At the same time I also realized we spend a lot time walking to restrooms to wash hands.
As I started to plan this year's trip I knew finding a solution for this was a priority. I found an idea on Pinterest which utilized a bucket with a spigot for dish/hand washing. I decided I would modify this camping hack to suit my needs. As always storage is an issue for me so I first started searching for a collapsible water carrier. I soon realized that a good one is hard to find so I decided to go with this hard durable plastic carrier by Coleman.
To create my washing station I purchased: Coleman Water Carrier, InterDesign Self-Adhesive Towel Grabber, A folding paper towel holder, heavy duty velcro and Camco 42973 Rectangular Collapsible Wash Bucket. The towel grabbers come with a strong adhesive that stick directly to the jug. I placed one on each side to hold dish towels. I purchased a folding paper towel holder from my dollar store to hold the paper towels (check your dollar store or you can order something like... Good Cook Deluxe Paper Towel Holder- make sure you get one that folds flat when empty..

Before using I rinsed the item and found a few bits of plastic inside the container. It took 3 rinses to get them all out. There were a lot more than shown in the photo.

My father purchased two of these Coleman 5-gallon water jugs for my wife and I as emergency water storage when we moved into a common hurricane area. We have used the Coleman water jugs for 8 years and have never had a problem with them. They can be laid on their sides on picnic tables, then open the vent on top and they serve as a great kid-friendly water service. The nozzles are easy to turn and easy to clean. During the hard Pennsylvania winters, I keep both of them full in case of emergencies. Every year before we start camping and fishing I wash them out with a table spoon of bleach and fill them with hot water. I would recommend these to my friends and I plan on buying a few more for safe keeping! Thanks, Coleman, for making another good piece of camping gear.
