As beginners start to learn the techniques from my book and try collage theyll begin to see that collage is all about play and pasting materials down and seeing what happens next. There is no way to make mistakes! If you don't like something you can paste over it, paint over and add something else. There is no wrong way to make a collage there is no way to fail! In fact, simply by experimenting with collage, can help you to find and improve your creative voice. I have added journaling prompts at the back of the book to help the reader on their creative journey.
I hope that by reading this book and using some my of "tricks of the trade," the readers will fall in love with working in collage as I have. I'll help them discover a few background techniques, that will get their artwork started. We'll do image transfer techniques, beeswax collage and a variety of other methods to get them on their way to working in mixed media collage. Most importantly, I have a section on composition and tips to create artworks with successful compositions.
But most of all I hope that this book will help the reader to discover the magic of collage, the unpredictable and exciting road of working in mixed media. You never know what's going to happen, and that's what makes it so fun!

Each process is explained clearly in text, demonstrated clearly in photos. Other collage elements are discussed, such as backgrounds, composition and design strategies, glazing, paint peeling, using found objects, adding textures, creating faux antique styles like verdigris, patina, rust. She also teaches basic (and thrifty) framing methods for the finished canvas or panel using lattice wood and a basic miter box saw.
Sure, plenty of the composition / design / framing how-to bits, are things I already have mastered, but as a whole, this book is a great teacher and source of inspiration. While she didn't mention Joseph Cornell, it seemed to me that her strongest work had heavy Cornell-ish elements.
This book won't sit on my shelf long enough to get dusty.
I would recommend this book to all beginning collage artists and even those who have been doing work for awhile to stretch their craft in a new direction. Claudine Hellmuth is a master at teaching the art of collage and I am really impressed by how easy she makes this medium seem.
I am a beginning collage artist; however, this book would be great for anyone at any level. The ideas are creative, very different, and explicitly described so that anyone can carry them out. Materials are listed at the start of each lesson.
Some of the topics that are covered are: glazing paint, peeling paint, texured paint, peeling paper, heat transfers, caulking transfers, working with beeswax, antiquing found objects, miniature assemblages, collage storytelling, and much more.
I am taking a beginning collage class next month, but probably will not be able to wait to try the techniques listed here. I'm inspired to experiment, and with this book, also empowered to experiment!
Highly recommended!
