I have always admired and quoted Lord Acton. And although I had his works in printed form, I bought this to be able to find quotes more easily and completely.
As one example, everyone is familiar with his statement, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Almost no one knows the next line, "Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority, still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority. There is no worse heresy than that the office sanctifies the holder of it."
