Limited edition box set contains the albums In the Aeroplane Over the Sea LP and On Avery Island 2-LP, a 12" picture disc pressing of Live at Jittery Joe's, two 10" vinyl EPs, three 7" vinyl singles, and two folded posters plus other inserts. The two full-length records that Jeff Mangum made as Neutral Milk Hotel sound both in and out of time. Like translations of a shared subconscious, 1996's On Avery Island and 1998's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea give voice to the perennial spirit of youthful epiphany, of beginning to see the world clearly, to process and express it- no matter when you encounter them. With lo-fi indie rock, accordion, singing saw, tape collages, the so-called "zanzithophone" and beyond, Neutral Milk Hotel created an eternal entry into their Elephant 6 scene and an enduring feeling of possibility.

Excellent music, horrendous quality control for records

If you’re spending the money to buy this set, you know the music is outstanding.

In fairness, all of the trappings here are also well produced. The box, itself, all the inserts, and the covers are of decent quality, so if you collect music to look at it, this set may be for you!

Unfortunately, if you like to listen to the music you collect, this set looks and feels like Merge Records holds a contemptuous view of you.

The records are all packed in the absolute worst quality Record Wrecker inner sleeves. They are cheap, abrasive paper, found wrinkled on most of the albums in the box, as though they were hatefully shoved into their jackets. If one attempts to remove the albums from the inner sleeves by any means except by tearing them off, they will be left with scratched, abraded records. This was even after using a Milty Zerostat to remove static from the vinyl surfaces and the inside of the sleeves. Once they are removed them from their inner sleeves, the records are of course covered with paper debris, due to the staticky, cheap, abrasive paper that was stuck to them. To top it off, when placed on a turntable, so they can be cleaned and played, it is obvious that the albums are badly warped, due to poor manufacturing standards.

This set was made at GZ, in Czech Republic. For a long time, they tried pretty hard to win Worst Pressing Plant in Europe. Lately, their products are getting better reviews for quality control. I guess they just couldn’t have that. Once you’re the worst at something, you have to keep being horrible at it to stay there! Glad to see they’ve eliminated all QC standards once again, to resume releasing trash products, so record companies can cut corners and continue to cynically rip off their consumers.

If you do choose to buy this set, do not unpack it without poly-lined inner sleeves on hand. If you prioritize removing the records from their inner sleeves in the least damaged possible condition, you will need to destroy the inner sleeves and replace them with quality ones. You will also need a quality anti-static record cleaner and, ideally, a static neutralizer, like the Zerostat.

All in all, this set was a missed opportunity to give fans of this incredible band a definitive collector’s set. This is, first and foremost, a pretty object to look at, if you don’t care about music.

Beautifully designed set (designed in conjunction with Jeff Mangum himself apparently) gathering all of the NMH music in one place including the Live at Jittery Joe's album not in the last box set version! Beautiful art, and of course the timeless music. Iconic.

What an amazing box set! Everything arrived, as described, and in great condition. You can tell no detail was spared in curating this set. The Live At Jittery Joes picture disk is especially stunning and sounds great. So pleased to have added this to my collection.
