I will not lie to you, this band called Scale the Summit took more than getting used to than any other instrumental rock band I bought I also doubt that I want sell this album and give to someone else who loves this band. I kind took me almost a month to figure this band out and noticed they are not straightforward band that you figured to be all thrash metal or simply rock played group that can play it loud and up tempo throughout this entire album. When I first listen to the first song of the album called "Colossal" it almost it was going to be a miss because most songs are almost loud and upbeat, be not this one however they this band mixes different patches of sounds and tempos that most metal bands don't regularly do and when I try to get to figure it out it turn out to be a good thing for a while and when I listened to the rest of songs, it almost had that same pattern and some it hard it times and some of it soft. Overall, this whole album from Scale the Summit, had my doubts before time and time again and when you get to figure it out for a while it was okay when at least expected from this band and whole album they created to make happened for them. typical

I first heard Scale the Summit play at the Progressive Nation 09' tour, and while even though they were the first opening band, I have to say they blew every other band away that night. They are extremely talented and play super tight. They have an awesome style that almost combines prog metal with a bluesy jazz sound. Then a couple years after the PN09' tour, I saw them again and they played some of this new album. After that show, I had to hear more. I bought this album and it now has to be one of my favorites in my collection. It is very musical, has a good mix of heavy and driving but also cool, slow and melodic. The album recording quality is great as well. It sounds awesome on a nice sound system and in my car. Scale The Summit is a band that more people NEED to know about. Give them a try!

Steve Vai and Satch wasted their careers trying to achieve what these guys did on their second album. There first was a little too much on the heels of Animals as Leaders, but on their second they break off and play it like it's never been played. For me, this represents the Fusion age where it stalled in the late 60s and faced with every electronic possibility musicians opted for every instrument and without balls. This carried on into the early 80s where fusion died an early death. Revived, these guys played it every way it was meant to be and kill it sick with heaviness. You should not miss this album. Killer.

If you enjoyed the previous album, Carving Desert Canyons, stop right here and just get this; it is quite a worthy follow-up. Scale the Summit's tagline is "Their strings are voices." This is a reference to both the instrumental nature of their music and the supremely evocative melody that guitarist Chris Letchford & co. excel at creating. A multitude of techniques are employed: creative use of 8-string guitars, gentle arpeggio sweeping, indie-style multi-finger tapping, and just a hint of shred, none of which ever comes off as overly flashy but all in its place. These guys know how to put the music first. Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys beautiful instrumental rock, metal lovers looking for something more laid-back, and guitarists.

This album really blew me away! I randomly checked this one out while going through the "Customers Who Bought Items in Your Recent History Also Bought" section and after previewing a few songs it sounded like a decent buy. Well for me it turned out to be an AWESOME buy! The energy and passion coming from these young musicians is evident in the music they make. The individual songs move from intense melodic metal to pulse pounding riffage to serene and beautiful moments without missing a beat or losing cohesion. Such a happy accident for me in coming across this band!

Just a bit grittier

Scale The Summit can be a frustrating band. Technically precise, polished, and clean, yet if the band’s recorded music has faults, those faults come from the logical nature of the music, stripping it of spontaneity, making the progressions occasionally predictable. Technically precise music can be unpredictable, even when mathematical, even within the genre. Consider Animals As Leaders, as a high bar. Yet there is something that can keep drawing a listener back, because at the core, any given piece by the present band usually has a core idea worth exploring. A theorem which is simple to prove may still be valuable to prove, if one thinks in mathematical terms. What may be missing on Scale the Summit’s albums is often rawness, which can serve as a valuable counterpoint to the precision of the instrumentalists’ playing. The Collective, unlike much of the group’s work, has some of that. To be sure, this is not a juke joint blues jam of the kind that Fat Possum Records would release, and it is not even merely the occasional distortion on some guitars that would lead to the adjective, “raw.” One could add some electronic processing to an Andres Segovia recording of Bach to create some distortion, and that wouldn’t make it sound “raw” because the compositions and the playing technique were all immaculate, and one listens to Segovia playing Bach when that is what one wants. Compositional rawness is something else. The tritone, dissonance, syncopation and weirdly-matched polyrhythms… those are compositional, as examples. For the most part, Scale The Summit composes as cleanly as they play, but this one is played, recorded and even composed with a bit more grit to it, which helps, considering the genre. There are guitarists who have heavily influenced the group, notable for their immaculate playing, but to those who approach the music from more of a blues/jazz background, overemphasis on those sources of influence can detract, and some grit is important. Lack of same occasionally holds back the group. The Collective is just a bit more satisfying, thanks to a bit more compositional messiness. The playing never shows a bad note, but compositionally, some genres benefit from a little dirt. Is the Maestro wincing? If so, one is playing classical incorrectly, but if he isn’t wincing, one is probably playing rock incorrectly.

Habe vor einigen Tagen eine Promo-Copy von "The Collective" erhalten und habe sie jetzt mehrere male durchgehört. Mein Urteil: Eines der besten, wenn nicht sogar "Das Beste", Prog.-Rock/Metal-Album bis jetzt, in diesem Jahr..!!
Der Reihe nach...
SCALE THE SUMMIT, bestehen seit 2004 und kommen aus Houston/Texas. Sie haben bis dato 3 Longplayer veröffentlicht, wobei mir alle drei gut bis sehr gut gefallen.
"Monument" erschien 2007, "Carving Desert Canyons" erschien 2009 und nun "The Collective" von 2011.
Die 11 Stücke, verteilt auf fast 47 Min., auf "The Collective", sind allesamt gut durchhörbar. Einen "Pausenfüller" gibt es nicht und man merkt richtig die unbändige Spielfreude, der 4 Bandmitglieder heraus. SCALE THE SUMMIT, bestehen aus:
Chris Letchford - guitars
Jordan Eberhardt - bass
Pat Skeffington - drums
Travis Levrier - 7 String guitar.
Sicherlich, gibt es einige musikalische Ähnlichkeiten mit Dream Theater, jedoch sind SCALE THE SUMMIT sehr eigenständig und drücken dem Prog.-Metal Genre, spätestens mit diesem Album, ihren eigenen Stempel auf.
Meine Favoriten sind "Colossal", "Emersion", "Gallows", "Origin Of Species" und das geniale "Black Hills", mit seinen rafinierten Rythmenwechseln. Als Anspieltipps, sind eigentlich alle Stücke zu empfehlen.
Fazit: Wer Wert auf sehr guten, eigenständigen Prog-Rock/Metal legt, sollte bei "The Collective" zugreifen, keine Frage.
