Top customer reviews
I purchased this book just about a year ago, and I now find myself in the great job that it helped me to land (in a very challenging environment) with a Big Five Consulting company. Krueger offers tips in all of the necessary categories from start to finish, from resumes to job fairs to interviews to salary negotiation.
I remember re-reading the relevant chapter before each step in the hiring process with my current employer. Every step of the way, this book offered tips that helped me to seal the deal. For the [money] you'll pay, you can't find a better investment. You'll never approach the job search the same way again!
I've been searching for a single, comprehensive job search book for college students for quite some time; the kind that could be incorporated into a career course, or highly recommended for doing a very good job at nearly everything. My standards are high, but not unrealistic: it should address major areas like career development and job search, as well as resume, cover letter and interview preparation. It doesn't need to be perfect, nor does it need to contain every possible permutation of resume formats. It just needs to be a solid collection of sensibly organized, dependable sections that college students would read, relate to, and take action with.
Brian Krueger achieves these goals with his 6th edition of The College Grad Job Hunter. Based on his direct personal experience as a recruiting professional (more than 10,000 interviews conducted), Krueger wrote this book to serve as a "personal advisor in seeking out and finding that critical first position."
The structure is sound: the four sections include "Preparing for Your Job Search," Finding Hiring Companies," Interviewing Success," and "From Interview to Offer to Job." This lends itself nicely to incorporating the readings into a course on career development.
The solid structure is supported by strong content written in an accessible style that is conversational, yet firm; Krueger's voice will be well received by college age students looking for straight, simple and practical advice. He advises students on what to do, and always follows up with specific methods for how to do it. His "Career Planning and Job Search Timetable" is the comprehensive four page bulleted checklist I always wanted to write; now I can refer students to this book, and they can read, learn, and practice right away.
What will make this great book even better? The personalization that a counselor or instructor offers when used in a class, as part of a workshop series, or as a recommendation. His website, collegegrad.com, supplements and complements the book very nicely. Highly recommended for students and career professionals alike; my copy is already well-worn, highlighted and extensively annotated throughout!
In support of your continued success,
The book has detailed advice and multiple techniques in every step of the job search process, from networking to sealing the job offer to everything in between. Some of the most helpful sections to me were: a checklist of what to include on your résumé, breakdown of a cover letter from paragraph to paragraph, and preparing for various kinds of interviews. With the help of this book (and a solid educational background), I was able to get the first job I applied for!
It's too bad I didn't look into getting a book like this until after I graduated from college. If you're still in college, I'd highly recommend you get access to this book BEFORE you graduate, so that you can be prepared for the job world as early as possible. The beginning of this book starts with tasks you should do when you're still in college, so the book's title is misleading in that sense.
Happy job hunting!
I have highly recommended this book to every college student I know looking for a great job and will continue to. This is one book that I don't even lend to my closest friends because I value it so much! Buy yours today, you won't be disappointed
