Product Description
From executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Ryan Condal (Hercules), comes a sci-fi thriller that critics promise will be "your newest obsession" (Clarke Wolfe, Nerdist). Set in the very near future, Colony centers on one family's struggle to survive an occupied Los Angeles, now a dangerous world of divided ideologies. While some choose to collaborate with the occupation and benefit from the new order, others rebel and suffer the consequences. Will Bowman (Josh Holloway, Lost) a former FBI agent, and his wife Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies, The Walking Dead) have been separated from their son during the invasion and do whatever is necessary to be reunited. I'm a huge sci-fi geek and particularly love alien and post-apocalyptic type stories. This combines both - well, I guess the majority of alien based movies are both anyway. There is something reminiscent of District 9...perhaps it's just that the human colonies are divided up into various walled districts and further divisions within separating various socioeconomic groups (but supposedly based on level of trust and loyalty to the alien controllers).
The main premise is a family in one of these districts and one of their children, a teen, who happened to be in an area far enough away when the divisions occurred that he is stuck in a different district. The father previously was a cop/investigator type person but he's not doing that with the current alien approved government initially, and instead he's plotting how to find and retrieve his son. The wife/mother is a physician, but also a rebel, so when the father (minor spoiler) is recruited to work for the alien regime (with no option to really say no) you have an added tension/story-line. They family has a child who requires insulin which, under the alien regime must be obtained illegally, as essentially those with such diseases are permitted to die, leaving only those who are healthier to survive and continue on the gene pool. The wife/mother also has a sister who seems to be a bit reckless and prone to trouble making which causes tension between the sisters.
I enjoy the multiple story lines and the show overall and it's one of my current favorites, along with 12 monkeys (the series, not the older movie), Wayward Pines,& Grimm (to give an example of my tastes). I tend to like most all sci-fi that is plot & storyline based instead of focused on fighting, violence, blood and guts (which most scifi movies seem to be these days).
We'll see what the future holds but so far, I'm hooked.
The main reason I'm leaving the review is to counter the false one star ratings. PLEASE don't rate amazon's service or methods. The only thing that suffers when you give it a 1 because you're displeased with Amazon is the show itself. Nobody from Amazon will even see your complaint. So please, once the show starts, if you like it, consider changing your rating. Amazon's policies and imperfections have nothing to do with the show, which is what looks bad because of the low ratings. The show is pretty good and will no doubt get better as we get deeper into the story. Unfortunately, people may be less likely to give it a fair chance because of the low rating.

There are English subtitles. Amazon refuses to add this information though I bought the DVDs! Why?
Focus is on the Bowman family, headed by Will and Katie (Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies). At first they seem happy enough., but all is far from well. What has become of son Charlie? Will current circumstances tear the family apart?
Expect to be perplexed, for a lot mystifies. (After all, one of the creators was also responsible for "Lost".) Who are these invaders, they curiously not evident? How do they communicate? How much of the world has been affected?
Such vagueness may initially irritate, but gradually the series takes hold - helped by strong central performances, including Peter Jacobson's wily Governor Snyder The early death of a prominent character (my favourite one actually) increases apprehension about what may happen to others - a ploy to ensure tension ever mounts.
Unusually there is no clear distinction drawn between the good and bad. Freedom fighters or terrorists? Much depends on one's point of view. Throughout history right up to today, so many have had to decide to conform or oppose. Admittedly, as yet, no aliens have been involved - but sadly never a shortage of ruthless leaders determined to subject whole populations to their will.
Ten episodes, they increasingly exciting. A bonus describes how the series came about and how special effects (like that wall and a Los Angeles without cars) were achieved. Cast are invited to say how they would react in similar circumstances - their answers interestingly varied.
Welcome a thought-provoking series with no easy answers.
