About the authors

Crystal Swain-Bates is a celebrated children’s book author and the owner of Goldest Karat Publishing. Fed up with the lack of black children’s books on the market, Crystal founded Goldest Karat Publishing in order to address the lack of diversity in children’s literature.
Crystal’s children’s books have been seen on platforms including CNN and Huffington Post and used as props for hit television shows such as BET’s “Being Mary Jane” and “The Game”.
Named by the Huffington post as one of "21 Children's Books Every Black Kid Should Read" and cited by numerous media outlets, including Essence magazine, as a top book emphasizing natural hair and brown girl beauty, her book "Big Hair, Don't Care is one of Amazon’s most highly reviewed black children’s books on the market.
A native of Atlanta, GA, Crystal holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Florida State University and is an avid world traveler.

Janine Carrington is a Canadian Illustrator that specializes in BIPOC centred Black affirming Children's books and Comics. She was born in Toronto, Ontario and taught the basics of drawing by her pioneering artist father. Encouraged to pursue art by her Caribbean born art-enthusiast mother, she went on to study painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and film in high school and at the Ontario College of Art and Design. After completing her last year of college in Florence, Italy, she took time to travel the world before settling in Toronto again. She has been working professionally since 2008 and her work has been published in more than 40 children's books world wide including Canada's most highly respected Children's magazine. She is currently inspired by her wonderful son to create art that that uplifts all children, especially those of colour.

dozens and give them out to little girls.
I am an adult woman of color and relish the very idea that I can color images that look like me and have hair textures that I am familiar with. In all honesty I would recommend this coloring book for all little girls, it is a perfect example of the diversity that exists within our world.
Love, love, love it!
I'm very happy with the coloring book... but that's largely because there isn't much else out there like it. I do wish the pictures were more intricate, again I have 8 year olds, but the simplicity of the images in this one might be suitable for younger children. Still, that doesn't detract from it's value in not only it's existence but the quality of the images. The women are also not all the same shape, which is great.

Got it yesterday, stopped doing what I needed to be doing and started coloring right away! Love it!

I've also been working on another coloring book called Supernatural! It features 17 naturally curly haired superheroes almost ready to save the world. Check it out at janinecarrington.wix.com/supernatural or on amazon.com in a few days.
As well there is a Facebook page with updates about our heroes and their mission to save the world! www.facebook.com/Supernatural-A-colouring-book-1658333507717381/?fref=photo
Thanks to everyone who said something kind about this book. It's so inspiring to know I'm not nearly the only one passionate about this theme.

Would be great if there was a version with perforated pages so could pull them out to either colour and or display
BUT Great for empowering the next Afro-haired generation!
