Editorial Reviews

Review

Did you know there are 24 colors in the Ives Color Wheel? Interested in trying out 5 different color schemes for each of the 24 colors? Unlock the mystery and beauty of color with this second edition book by Joen Wolfrom. Expanded with over 100 new quilts, this is an extraordinary reference. Colors and their interactions are presented in a stylish and understandable way. Train your eye to truly sees the differences between tints, shades, tones, and pure colors so you can control the moods, visual messages, and focus in your design. Historical notes on color plus beautiful images of quilt examples will enable you to approach your quilting with both information and inspiration. (Quilting Arts Magazine, February/March 2015)

For many years, the first edition of this book was a 'must have' on any quilter's and textile artists' shelf. The pages sang with the joy of color and were an inspiration to many creative people. This second edition is just as beautiful and inspiring. Even before the reader gets to the introduction, there is a 10-page gallery of pieces that are beautifully shot and exemplify the many ways that color can be used to great effect. For anyone looking to take the next step in creating powerful and memorable art, this book is required reading. (Down and Under Textiles Magazine, February 2015)

You will soon be on your way to mastering color theory including transparency, luminosity, depth, & more. A must-have reference book. (The Applique Society Newsletter, January 2015)

Color Play was originally published in 2000 and this edition has been updated and expanded to include over 100 new quilt photos. This book is a comprehensive study of the colour wheel, starting with a look at pure colour, tints, shades and tones. Examples of quilts which demonstrate each area are accompanied by descriptions of how colour is used and why it is effective. What follows on from that is an exploration of colour plans, from monochromatic, complementary, analogous and split-complementary, with more in between and beyond. Values of colour are explained, as are the descriptions of selected colours and how they make us feel, where they are on the colour wheel and where in the book you can find more information about them. The grand finale is a study of 24 colours in great detail showing different colour schemes that work together with diagrams of quilt blocks to demonstrate. This is a fantastic book which benefits from the update because the wealth of new quilts works so well in its favour. The author relates her observations about colour to quilt schemes, what effects particular colours have on the way they are perceived and how to build up your use of colour by creating a personal ‘Colour Plan'. To have such an extensive array of colours that are explored in such detail is a great way of getting to grips with starting to create colour schemes for work. This is a great book for all textile artists and anyone who feels unable to get to grips with how colours work together. (Workshop on the Web, December 2014) --This text refers to the paperback edition.
