About the Author

"I love writing fiction - it's the perfect occupation for someone who can't decide what they want to be when they grow up. With each new story, I get to explore a new world." Vanessa Grant's love affair with writing fiction began at the age of 12 when she decided to write a novel of her own, sitting up in bed using the typewriter she'd been given for her birthday. Not a computer, not an electric typewriter, but a then-state-of-the-art manual typewriter. The story ground to a halt on page 50 but Vanessa never forgot the excitement of bringing her own characters to life. In 1985 Vanessa's novel Pacific Disturbance was published in hardcover by Mills and Boon. She now has over 10 million books sold and has been translated into 15 languages. She also has written what one critic described as, "by far the best writing book I've ever read." Writing Romance, published by Self Counsel Press, won the Under the Covers Best Writing Book Award, and is currently in its third edition. Over the years her love of storytelling and curiosity about people led Vanessa to study psychology, volunteer on a crisis line, complete individual and relationship counselor training, volunteer as a peer counselor for a family life organization, and tell stories about life, love, and secrets. Vanessa is also a university professor, a publisher of educational materials and eBooks, and has given workshops to writers' groups in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. Vanessa and her husband live on Vancouver Island in the Pacific Northwest with their two Australian Shepherd dogs.

3.5 stars

I'm addicted to those freebies for my Kindle. The book blurb grabbed my attention and it turned out to be a really enjoyable afternoon of reading. It's the old story of opposites attract. When they meet in the Emergency Room after a little girl runs in front of Jamie's car and is hit, the world begins to tilt. Alex is strictly a play-by-the-rules uptight pediatrician specializing in children's diabetes. He's 38 years old with a successful practice, an obnoxious, snotty and opinionated sister, along with a mother who is a famous singer. Alex is also a little on the obnoxious side, as well. Jamie is an upcoming and popular new artist in Seattle. She's 28 years old and a virgin. She doesn't like being "managed" or living inside boundaries that Alex feels the need to set. With her bright red head of curls, ivory skin and gorgeous face, she's a temptation he can't seem to ignore. And he can't convince her to play by his rules either.

Quick, fast-paced romantic romp.

This was my first book by Vanessa Grant but not the last. I really, really enjoyed this book. I love that Jamie and Alex are Sooo different.

Alex likes to stay inside the box; he likes order, and control. Jamie on the other hand refuses to be "managed"; she likes to make the rules up as she goes along. She tried to live the controlled life once before and she didn't like it. Her life is her art, and his is being a doctor advocating for children's diabetes. When they meet at the hospital after Jamie's car hits a little girl sparks fly and not in a good way. Alex instantly dislikes her, because he feels he knows her kind, restless, and irresponsible. As they spend time together their attraction grows and so does their views on each other, and Love.

Only problem I had with this book was, I wish it had a extended ending. I feel with a couple more chapters it would have received that fifth star.

Overall great book!!!

If you like old school romance, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. I don't, and I didn't. By old school romance, I mean those books where the hero never "says" anything. He grates, he grinds, he groans, he grits, but never seems to say anything in a normal conversational tone of voice - at least not to the heroine. He then continues to despise and belittle her until the end when they love each other forever. For some reason the plot has to include some sort of massive humiliation of the heroine by the hero as well. This is a skilfully written book by an old school romance master, but not enjoyable to those of us who like their heros/heroines to actually like each other, and don't need our heroines to be Dominated in an abusive manner.
