While children start noticing differences in appearance as early as toddlerhood, they learn the labels for and meaning of those differences from ADULTS. It is predictable that children would be confused by labels like “black” and “white” to describe people that are actually different shades of brown.
This book does an excellent job of explaining skin color as a matter of melanin and nothing more. While I plan to explain the social construction of race and issues of racism to my child at developmentally appropriate times, I realize that he is and will be exposed to concepts of race well before that. In that regard, I try to be intentional in the books I buy, shows he watches, etc. but also know there are areas of exposure I cannot completely control for (ie, the visual marketing all around us, school, teachers, other children). It’s predictable that most of what he’ll be exposed to during his earliest years outside our home will be misinformIng and confusing.
While race is a huge part of America’s history and existing culture, skin color is nothing more than varying amounts of melanin inherited from ancestors as a matter of physical environment. I view this book as a great introduction to and foundation for those later talks about race, specifically because it does NOT perpetuate the fallacy of race and talks about skin color accurately, clearly, and appropriately for younger years.
On top of that, it’s bilingual!!!
Preschoolers are absolutely already noting difference and being able to address it head on through this book is great. Major plus that it’s bilingual!
