The first section of the book is HATS. It's hard to pick out my favorites because they are all so stunning. I suppose if I was absolutely FORCED to name my favorites, they would be the Cardinal Ski Hat, the Chickadee Chullo, the Cinnamon Teal Chullo and the Seven-Point Star Tam. I drooled over every hat pattern and can't decide which to knit first.
The second chapter is MITTENS. The Butterfly Mittens are beautiful and poignant. The design is striking and the cancer survivor ribbons touched my heart. I love the Nuthatch Mittens as well. The Sanquhar Mitten Gallery is drop dead beautiful - museum quality.
The third chapter is GLOVES AND FLIP-TOPS. There are several that are an homage to cancer survivors and again, they are both beautiful and poignant. I especially love the Salt and Pepper Pattern and the Butterfly Flip-Tops. I'm especially fond of chickadees which are abundant in the Alaskan winters. The Chickadee gloves are just perfect for me to knit. The Cinnamon Teal Flip-Tops are beautiful and especially useful as the tops come off so that driving and rooting around in your purse is made easier.
What makes this book special is not just the beautiful patterns, but the quality of instruction and the way the author has a basic pattern for gloves, mittens, hats and tams. When I buy a knitting book, I ask myself three questions:
Does the book contain patterns I will knit?
Is the book a good resource?
Are the patterns easy to read and understand?
The answer to all three questions is a resounding yes. This is a GREAT addition to my knitting library and I'm very glad I have it.
Dec. 10th, 2012 UPDATE
I have attempted the mittens, and am more frustrated than ever. I learned the Turkish cast on from YouTube. I then proceeded to make two thumbs, but once I got to the main mitten body, geesh... I won't go into it. Suffice to say, you are much better off using a free cuff up mitten pattern from Ravelry, and just incorporating whichever chart you want, adjusting the stitches of course. I will not be trying to make these mittens again... her directions are so convoluted, so difficult to use, she even says so herself in the book that the pattern is difficult. Why go to the trouble, when there is an easier way? Best of luck all!

If you have never done Fair Isle or Norwegian style knitting, and don't mind knitting on circular or double pointed sets of needles with 4ply thickness yarn then this is a good book to start with.
The book gives a basic pattern for each style, for instance all the mittens are made in the same way with the same number of stitches throughout, what changes is the design. In all cases you follow the chosen chart, along with written instructions on what to do when.
If you've never made any mittens or gloves before then you may find it helpful to follow the written instuctions and ignore the chart for the first pair. Once you have the idea, then decide which chart you like and go for it.
Most items in here can be made with any 4 ply you wish, yarn sources given are Canada and USA (internet sites given) except for Jamiesons wonderful Shetland wool.
Contents are chullos, tams, ski hats, gloves, mittens, and flip tops, all with birds, ducks, snowflakes, griffin, trees and an option to mix and match the motifs. All the charts are in colour which I find makes them easier to follow. Once I stock up on Jamiesons I'll be giving plenty of these designs a test run - if I hit any problems you'll be first to know.
