Ok, I just don't know where to begin with this review. I went into this book blind. I came across it while a book blog I follow was promoting it because it was on sale. I took a chance on it because I prefer darker reads. What I read was exactly what I was looking for. My only issue with the book was the editing. It was pretty much nonexistent. I had a really hard time following what the hell was going on, from sentence to sentence pretty much. And the punctuation was not even there. There were no periods, commas, semi-colons, nothing. And in all honesty, that is the only reason I cannot in good faith give it a higher rating. While it was difficult at times to follow, I was able to make it through the book. And I am so glad that I did. This book follows Lauri and Rowan, 2 people from the exact same world living very different lives, but both believing that nothing is an "accident". Lauri is the daughter of a hitman. A very successful and feared hitman. She doesn't know what he is until she is almost 17 years old. Her father, Mick, is forced to tell her about the life because they have lost everyone in their lives, and if anything were to happen to him, she will have no one. He tells her of his plan to keep her safe, where she is to go, and what she is to do if the time comes that he dies. He tells her that someone from his organization, the only one he trusts, will watch her from afar. He is to make sure that she is safe, and will stay close to her until the time comes that either there is no threat to her or she find a husband to watch over her. Of course, Mick has an "accident" and dies. Lauri makes her escape, and carves a life out for herself, just as her father wished. She was sheltered and naive, but is determined to get her HEA. She goes to school and starts living.Read more ›

~ What I Thought ~

There is no way you can prepare yourself for the brilliance that is this book. It is rough. It is gritty. It'll make you feel emotions that you may never have before. Hell, you might not have even heard of the emotion.

Fo some of us, there are gritty, raw emotions; moments in life, that just hit home in this book. For those of us, there is no way to get away from the addiction to this book. You are drawn to it. I was one of those readers.

Fromt he first pages, there were parts of this book that I related to on so many levels. I found myself connecting with the characters, feeling their world. I know what it's like to feel what she did.

I couldn't help but fall in love with what was taking place. The 'death,' waking up to find yourself at the mercy of the one person you know, the one you trust, that man you always wanted.

Both of the characters are broken. They have no idea how to be a normal person and don't think that is ever an option for them. They hate people, they hate life and they hate themselves. Stuck in a world where they feel that they are better off dead. They soon start to see that it may just be possible that they are dead on the outside, battered, bruised and broken, but a flame can grown on the inside.

They find ways to conquer their pain, to cover it up. I know so many people who do this, in many different ways, and I am one of them. Reading as they went through their days, building a new type of life together, trying to overcome everything they think they are, I was on the edge of my seat. I couldn't get enough.

But you knew it had to happen. Broken things always stay broken. Something had to give.

The ending threw in that twist I was waiting for.

So far this month I have bought and read 20 ebooks. I didn't write any reviews even when a book wasn't all that great. Late last night, after I finished Colour My Ugly, I couldn't fall sleep because my mind kept screaming at me "write a review". So I am writing my first book review ever. I read all kinds of books and one of my favourites is Heat by R. Lee Smith so I don't mind a dark story. Colour My Ugly is very, very dark so just beware. If you like things wrapped in a pretty bow at the end of a book then this story is probably not for you. The storyline was very good and I found myself invested in Lauri and Rowan. The secondary characters were great. I would have loved this book if there had been any attempt to edit this book. The lack of sentence structure, grammar mistakes, appalling lack of punctuation had me rereading sentences on many many occasions. To me, some of the book felt like it was dictated and then just transcribed. These flawed and beautiful characters deserved so much better. I'm upset that a book I would have given a 4 1/2 is a 2 for me due to editing.
