Please note, I weigh 235 lbs, which puts a lot of pressure against the fabric when I'm crawling around in the snow. So, repelling water in those conditions is impressive.
I purchased this jacket mainly to wear while shoveling snow. This 2013-2014 winter has been brutal here in New Jersey and I came to realize that my Gore TeX hard shell wasn't very good for heavy shoveling because all of that water proofing doesn't help when my sweat can't escape fast enough to keep me dry. I would get soaked from the inside out. I've never owned a soft shell before and I was expecting a mediocre compromise between breath ability and waterproofing. What I got in this Columbia soft shell was a jacket that I would confidently call extremely waterproof, very wind resistant, and extremely breathable.
As for fit, I love it. I purchased an xl. I am 6'2" with broad shoulders, chest, and back. 36" waist. The jacket is an athletic fit, but the xl is roomy enough to comfortably wear a fitted hooded fleece underneath. A generous/baggy fleece would probably not be as comfortable. I prefer this slightly roomy fit to the overly tight, IMHO, fits of the other soft shells that I tried. It is also a bit longer than the other brands that I tried, covering most of my butt. With the cinch chord at the bottom drawn tight that is what I want on a windy day.
Wow, this has been a long review. I just wanted to share how much I love this jacket and how I am thoroughly impressed by it.
In my searches of looking for a hooded jacket I came across this one which I noticed to be the exact same design as the Ascender II but has the added hood I was looking for. What more could I ask for?
So I placed an order for a large size (which is the same as my other jacket) "Chase to the Point" and low and behold when it arrives it is WAY to big, like I'm wearing a trash bag. The sleeves are at least 1.5"-2" longer and the torso length is probably 3" longer not to mention the chest Width. I find this to be very shocking as the other jacket fits like a glove, maybe even a tad on the small size. Typically I wear a Large or X-Large depending on the brand.
Now if this jacket does fit you it is awesome, very high quality and blocks out a good bit of wind and water. Also a neat thing is you can vary the amount of heat it holds by zipping and unzipping the pockets. Makes a huge difference.
The best part I checked it is completely water proof. I collected a water on this coat and it didn't go through. What an awesome jacket but I wish it wasn't that long.
-very warm,but not too much.
-repels water very well.
-the LARGE was a bit larger than my expectations, but not too much.
