By the first week of December we had noticed that the both of the cuffs had frayed completely, as well as stitching elsewhere on the jacket. Furthermore, since this jacket's shell does not seem overly synthetic (think more cloth-like), the Velcro on the center zipper flap sticks and picks on fabric areas other than the Velcro. This is now causing shredding around the zipper area. This coat is starting to look as if it has been through some heavy use, even though it is only 1 month old.
As far as the warmth of the jacket, my daughter says it is "warm-ish". It seems like a light winter jacket only - something you wear until you want to go out and actually play in the snow. The growth system on the sleeves is a good idea, but I doubt this coat will live long enough to see a second season. As for the Omniheat dots, I doubt silver screenprinted dots (or the hype) keep you warm.
Since I missed the 1 month return date for an Amazon return, I am now trying to get an exchange or return through the Columbia company, under warranty of shoddy goods. I made a call to the Columbia store at the Mall of America to see if I could exchange it there and was immediately shut down by the manager and referred to taking it up online at the Columbia website. This is very inconvenient as I will now have to pay to ship it to them to "inspect" it to see if they will help me, plus my daughter will have to borrow a coat from a friend (we donate our old coats) until this is resolved.
I will be posting my results of this process and adjust my rating accordingly.
I ended up contacting Columbia directly, where the customer service representative told me I "shouldn't bother returning the jacket to Columbia" because their warranty and returns department was so overloaded, taking 4 - 6 weeks just to get into their inspection department. After their decision, then it might be repaired or replaced (which adds even more time). This would put me into mid-January. The representative asked me to return it to Amazon (even though I explained it was after my return date) because it would just be "easier for all of us." Unbelievable.
The only silver lining to my story is that I was able to work out a solution with Amazon (I begged) and immediately got a replacement jacket sent to me.
Amazing job Amazon! I was overly impressed with the level of courtesy and human compassion, not to mention their willingness to take responsibility for the products they sell, even if those companies (Columbia) won't.
All said and done, my daughter's replacement jacket is failing in the same manner as the first. I will be returning this one soon and will never purchase another Columbia product. I hope to also make sure no one else I know makes the same mistake. (Rating dropped to 1 Star)
FYI last year she had a children's place coat size xsmall. And I was worried about columbia sizes but it is true to their sizes and a columbia xxsmall fits kids from 4 to 6 year olds. My 5 year old is 45" longs and weight 36 lbs. hope this helps!!
