After reading the reviews for these pants I was really leery about ordering them even though they seemed to be exactly what I was looking for... but I figured what the heck, returning things through Amazon is easy so I ordered a pair.
In a lot of the reviews people recommend ordering at least a size larger than your actual waist size so I took that advice and ordered the correct length but two sizes larger than I normally wear. The pants came and they were just a little large in the waist, so if you like your pants to fit perfect I would recommend ordering only one waist size larger than you actually wear.
I ordered a length of 32 and the length is more like a 34 but that works out fine for me because I tuck them into my boots when hiking anyway.
These are really nice pants, especially for the less than $30. I'm surprised and a even a little disappointed by some of the reviews I read because they almost convinced me not to purchase them. They are light weight, breath easy and well made and they look nice too. I ordered another pair which arrived yesterday and the fitting was the same as the first pair.
I love these pants and couldn't be happier with both purchases. There are two reasons I gave this review 4 stars instead of 5. The first reason is because the sizing is off, a 38 inch waist should be 38 inches, you shouldn't have to spend 45 minutes reading reviews to know you have to order a size larger than you actually wear. The second reason is the listing. The colors are odd names such as "Tusk", "Fossil", "Gravel", "Grill", etc. I had a pretty good idea what those colors were until I viewed the listings. There are three pictures for the Fossil listing and each picture shows a different colored pair of pants... and its the same with a couple of the other ones. Personally I didn't care what color pants I received (as long as they weren't hot pink or neon green) but the pictures in a listing should be accurate and a customer should know what color they are ordering. So only 4 stars for these pants.
I normally wear a 32x32 Levi's jeans and that size generally holds across all other pants I've purchased. These pants size, however, is way off the mark. I read other reviews advising going a size up in the waist since they seem to run small. I did that and purchased a 34. At that size, they sit perfectly on my waist like all my other jeans.
However, I've also found the length is off, as well. I bought these as a 32 as usual, but they are way too long, even while wearing my hiking boots. I bought another pair in a 30 inseam and they line up almost exactly with my normal Levi's and feel great. If anything, they're still slightly on the long side, but I prefer a little slack while walking over having them ride up while sitting.
In the pictures, the blue jeans are 32x32 Levi's 527s, the darker gravel pants are the reviewed 34x32 Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Pant, and the tan pair is a proper fitting 34x30 Columbia Silver Ridge Cargo Pant.
In conclusion, I would recommend going up a size in the waist and also down a size in the length if you want these to match the size of normal jeans. I give them 4 stars. 5 stars for quality and comfort, but I've got to dock a star for the poor sizing.
If I can't fit a pair of pliers or a snub nose revolver in my front pockets without them sticking out, the pockets are too small. If I can't fit a cell phone and a wallet in my pockets without showing the world the detail of my business, the pockets are too small.
And really it is a danger to the public. If I go out in pants that tight it distracts the womenfolk so they crash their shopping carts. I can only imagine if I walked down the sidewalk. Give us comfortable pants with big pockets for the sake of public safety if nothing else!
More, let me be more clear. I'm a former soldier, former police officer and now work as a military contractor. I need pants that can stand up to more than light use. These pants ARE super comfortable. If you are used to wearing 5.11's or the equivalent, these are not the pants for you. These pants are more like really fragile pajamas that might rip if you use harsh language in their general direction.
In conclusion, they feel great and fit well....however, they won't hold up to anything stronger than a fart and are just nice enough to make me wish they had about 7x's the fabric. I will, unfortunately, be returning them. I wanted so badly to like these pants.
The problem I have found with many hiking pants and I did not think I'd have the problem with these because the convertible pants fit fine. If your a guy and have big tree trunk legs these will not fit you! These hiking pants are more like skinny jeans when you have them on and lift your leg up you feel like the part about the butt is going to rip!!
If it was only the waist size I'd give these a 4 star review because I'd still be able to wear them they would just be a little tight but because they seem to be made only for people who don't work out there legs it's a one star these pants are worthless to me!!
