I wear a 38 European and 7.5 U.S. in athletic shoes and most boots because I do like a little extra room in the toe box. Lately, either my foot is widening or the general construction of 'real' boots is getting narrower to save on materials or something. I did order these in a 7.5 because I have ordered 8's in the past (different brand/type) and found that even with thick wool socks, my foot slid a bit too much which caused a lack of sure-footedness in hiking along with blisters. This flipside of that is that if the boots are too snug, the foot becomes cold from restricted circulation and all the fleece, wool, or Omni-Heat lining in the world won't help.
To be fair, I am bare foot as often as the law will allow, and when I have to wear shoes I am in a thong sandal or Five Fingers. So, I am no longer accustomed to the snugness of everyday foot wear that most people may be (work boots, heels, etc.). However, in simply wearing these boots with basic Hanes tube socks, laces totally removed, feet on the ottoman, they were still snug enough that I had tingling sensations in my feet...So, back they went. I have reordered the same boot a half size larger (in a different color and lower price!), an 8, and that's done the trick as far as basic fit comfort.
The construction is very solid (read: stiff) and as some other reviewers have stated, these are not really going to stretch out or break-in the way you expect in a leather or even another type of man-made shoe or boot. Tread pattern is aggressive, but ice is ice and these will likely do as poorly on ice as any other footwear. Snow and slush and muck aught to be no problem! As long as there are no defects, the "waterproof construction" appears on point, but the proof will out when the weather hits.
Now, as soon as we get some snow, I will update the post with more details! :)
All in all, a superb purchase!
** These boots are INCREDIBLY stiff at first. I had a very difficult time driving a stick shift in said snow storm, but they seem to have loosened up a bit after being in them for a while. The good news is that it's great ankle support - almost like a ski boot. If you can tough it out while you break them in, you'll be really happy you did! **
