I purchased this book while studying Frederick Douglass, in his autobiography, stating that it was one he carried with him and returned to often while learning to read in his early adolescence. Unfortunately, it appears someone simply ripped the contents of the books from an online archive and cut and pasted it in a book form. Misspellings every other sentence, formatting issues almost every paragraph, and there is no table of contents, let alone a proper cited page. I haven't seen a Kindle book this unreadable in a very long time. I hope someone from the Kindle department removes it as I can't see anyone finding this copy as readable.

From the snipets included in The Columbian Orator, it seems to be a must have book, but I wanted to read it right away so I got it via Kindle. Although Kindle is a viable tool, in this instance it didn't work. The table of contents is an image and there are no available images in the electronic edition. I tried "clicking" on the advance arrow, but it goes 7 pages at a time. The Go To option doesn't work either. I was turned on the the book after reading the piece on the conversation between a master and his slave so that was the only thing I could put in the search engine, but even then it could'nt acces the page it was on. It's really too bad because this is a book all young people should read. Iv'e never had a problem with Kindle before, and I have no idea what the problem is, but if someone can correct it it would be a good thing for all the people who can't afford the soft or hard cover editions can access it.

This is a reprint of a book originally published in the 19th century. All the pages are readable but discolored by the aging of the material. It is an amazing thorough study of how to prepare oneself to speak before the public. Ancient and current authors are included. If the advice and suggestions in the book are practiced thoroughly, the reader will be an accomplished speaker. I am amazed that the such book ever existed and was published so many years ago. It is a gem and one to be used over and over again, despite the troubling problem with the damage to the pages that can become tiresome while reading. My suggestion is to put it away for a while, and come back to it later. A surprising coverage of what is current preparation for speakers that was first published over a hundred years ago!
If you are interested in Frederick Douglass or Abraham Lincoln, definitely buy this critical book in American educational history--but do not go for the Kindle version, which has all sorts of garbled characters. I thought it might be a cheap way for my students to read it, but NO.
I really want to read this book that is why I ordered, but it is impassible to read this book. It is almost all the pages are dark, black, and gray background. On page 164 there is not way you can read. It is a photocopy or something else because the words are on the top of each other.
I always see inside the book before I buy and I did not see this when I bought it. Amazon please let know the people the condition of the book.
I hate surprises like that especially with such a good history book.
I received a poorly printed copy, returned it for another, which also had similarly poor printing. I returned the second one for refund. Apparently no one is checking them.

The reprinting of this book didn't turn out very well. The pages are extremely dark, so your reading black letters off of a dark gray page. Some of the pages are better than others, but overall it's a mess. I have really wanted to read this so I will manage, but it will take a lot of getting use to. BTW I have nothing to compare this reprint to, it's extremely old so maybe they would all be this way.

This is how Frederick Douglass transformed himself from a slave to a first class orator. The text is still relevant today and provides good coaching for budding speakers young and old.
