So much more than a history book

Meet Columbus, once idolized, now demonized. He was neither saint nor devil, but a complex mixture of motives. Read about pre-Columbian native American culture, it was not the harmonious, unspoiled world that many want you to believe in. Robert Royal makes a great defense of western civilization without denying its warts and flaws. I loved the history, but this book is also highly relevant to the present.

Robert Royal’s commentary is a marvelous but not overbearing study of one of history’s most significant, underrated human beings and his accomplishments. My background is history and I have done some research on Christopher Columbus. The author gingerly touches on a more accurate profile of the great explorer by drawing on resources not universally known. It’s just enough for those who know nothing but the negative legends regarding Columbus and who may not be disposed to consider an extreme reversal.
The author, whose style hints at his brilliance, writes in a colloquial, reachable manner, like a conversation between thoughtful friends. I highly recommend Robert Royal’s timely profile. He may have saved the great navigator from near oblivion.

A Bit disappointing

Like most 20th-Century American children, I was taught that Columbus was a an Italian sailor who got lucky and stumbled on "the New World" while looking for something else. In addition, we were taught that the Spaniards who accompanied him were nothing more than gold-driven opportunists who killed the local population just for the sheer joy of seeing blood being spilt. (This was contrasted with the gentle "pilgrims" who, not being of Mediterranean stock, treated the native population with love and respect. These pictures were painted for me (and for others in my generation) in the 1940s and beyond. My children and grand-children were told the same story.
Fortunately, I read some serious history as an adult and learnt that what I had been taught was mostly (but not entirely) false. When I saw the reviews of Royal's book, I thought "This is just the kind of book that needs to be read by folks today. It is time to debunk the spurious line put out by the school-teachers."
It was a bit of a disappointment. Although it contains a fair appraisal of the clash of civilizations in the15th and 16th Centuries, it contains precious little about the man Columbus -- certainly less than the title would suggest. Instead, it rambles on at length on topics which are quite tangential to "Columbus and the Crisis of the West". His commentary on these side issues is in my view, quite correct and ought to be read by millions. But I wanted a book about Columbus, the man and his times, and the crisis which followed upon his "discovery".
One little side point, quite off the main path. In discussing the Spanish Inquisition, he referred to ". . . the Inquisition's injustices to Spanish Muslims and Jews . . " (p. 286) The fact is, there were no such injustices. The Jews and the Muslims were not under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition. Full Stop. To Royal's credit, that is the only clear historical error I noted in this four-star book.
