From the Author
Hey there--I call myself the "accidental pet writer" since I sorta-kinda-in-a-way fell into writing about pets. Did that ever happen to you? Some experience compelled you to pursue an unexpected path? When I was about 7 years old, my beloved dog Toby was sent to the shelter for killing the neighbor's cat. I still weep thinking about that. This book was written in his memory and dedicated to PREVENTING that from happening with other pets.
That's how this book came to be, but several "happy accidents" along the way brought me to that point. First, I interviewed for a vet tech spot (happened during a Chihuahua's emergency C-section!), and discovered a love of veterinary medicine and animal behavior. Second, it turned out I had a knack for translating "medicalese" into language us regular pet lovers could understand, and I began writing personal experience stories for pet magazines. Third, I got an assignment on how to introduce cats and dogs--and there was WAY too much fascinating info for one short article. The rest, as they say, is history.
And after writing this first ComPETability book focused on bringing cats and dogs together in harmony, I wrote two more in the series: ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems in Your Multi-CAT Household, and ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems in Your Multi-DOG Household. My prayer is that they keep you and your pets safe, happy and loved!

However, I'm also an editor, and the typos and formatting errors are driving me crazy. This is the first book I'm reading on my new Kindle, so I don't know if the typographical errors are typical of e-books, or if it's this publisher.
Be that as it may, I found this book to be extremely thorough and well researched and, hey, you can’t help but believe what she says about the inner workings of cats and dogs because she writes with a definite sense of authority. This book covers just about everything you could imagine about pet dynamics and, despite its focus on dog and cat interactions, is helpful for people like me, who would never dream of getting a cat, but often wonders what on earth is going on in my dog’s head. Very interesting read - even for the skeptic in you.
By the way, I received a complimentary digital edition of this book from Story Cartel because I promised to write an honest review. Honestly, I wouldn’t have picked it up otherwise, but I’m glad I did. (If you think I’m being kind for the wrong reasons, you should see what I wrote about those other books... )
Probably still needs a last edit before the next edition - the odd error pops up here and there. Such as "By the time of the Greeks, a variety of sent hounds were being developed." Under DOGGED EXAMPLES - I'm sure she meant SCENT not SENT. But hey, the context makes it clear what she means.
Next to breezy, well written and reads like a detective novel, I would add a word I hardly ever use unless the situation demands it - 'fascinating'. In that light I think the title should have been UNDERSTANDING rather than SOLVING Behavior Problems in your Cat-Dog Household.
Easily gets its five stars from me. Highly recommended.
I appreciate that the author has addressed the responsibility of pet owners as well as the basics of family adjustments. Cats and dogs can enrich a family in ways impossible to describe-one must experience the joy and love of pets to understand. This book is a terrific tool for anyone who wishes to truly experience that joy.
