For some years, Thom Mayne and Morphosis have been shaking up the world of architecture with their dramatically original buildings, but now they take their innovative approach one big notch higher, integrating urban planning and architecture in a lucid new method of design. Combinatory Urbanism lays out the philosophy and techniques of the method, as well as giving many detailed examples from their growing number of large-scale projects. This has the potential to be a real game-changer.

Great book, with incredible ideas and organized, clean presentation. Even if you are of of those Morphosis critics that do not necessarily agree with their style; you can take alot from the way their analysis is done and presented, the way their ideas evolve and how they respond to context.

This was a great buy for any architecture and urbanism enthusiast! Morphosis does a great job graphically laying out their urban projects with a clear focus on their combinatory approach to design. I bought this while doing thesis research for my M.Arch and it was a great value!

Great illustrations. Thom is really moving architecture in the write direction. He's a 'star' architect that people should look up to, not necessarily based on aesthetics, but as one whom actually understands the core of what are architecture of today needs to respond to.

Recommend this book to all practitioners and student's pursuing a thesis project to understand not only presentation, but also how to articulate an idea. Morphosis' describes their analysis of "complex behavior of collective form"--building on questions posed over the last 50 years by urban and systems theorists such as Jane Jacobs, Fumihiko Maki, and James Gleick. Mayne proposes a new operating paradigm--"combinatory urbanism"--characterized by finding a balance among the often contradictory forces at work in urban growth. Building on ideas he's pursued for many years, this book is a great addition for any architecture library.

Written by Thom Mayne of Morphosis, this is a study of the urban environment and how architecture and urban planning hold a relationship that co-exist and are dependent on each other. The graphics are rich and beautiful, and I would recommend for those who are interested in laying out a graphic portfolio relative to urban planning, this is a book you must buy.
