Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This novella is a character sketch of Harper. All my novellas are character based. There is no cliffhanger and there absolutely is character resolution.

James, had me at "What's your name?" (I would have just told him by the way. James, call me!) Anyway, this new series hits the ground running. Who is this guy? He's stalking the heroine Harper, there's a lot of she is mine references which I always adore, but... does he know her? Have they met before?

Harper is a mess, yet she's strong and smart. She's hiding from something or someone. She's got a past, filled with questionable characters. And she can't seem to shake that James is familiar in some way...

What a start to a new series. I was scared leaving the Rook & Ronin gang behind but James & Harper have me fully invested in this new series. The novella is perfect. A perfect intro. Its a full novella, not a short story. I felt like there was conclusion even though you will immediately finish reading and want so much more.

What this story is all about:
Harper is just barely eighteen, she’s on her own and she is hiding from a past that might not be that easy to escape. Trying to blend in to her surroundings, Harper finds herself the target of a man’s affections that is just as dangerous as it is arousing. But the one thing that Harper needs to be to remain safe is invisible, attracting the attention of any man, especially this man could destroy her.

James spends his days watching her. He knows everything there is to know about her except for how her body will feel beneath his, but he knows it won’t be long until those secrets reveal themselves.

When James can no longer stay away, the chase begins. As much as Harper knows that she should not let this man get close – that she should run, her body can’t deny the attraction. She wants him just as badly as he wants her.

Oh, the feels:
Absolutely Brilliant! J.A. Huss won me over with Rook & Ronin and then blew me away with giving me Ford & Spencer while giving us one twisted story that was so much bigger than I could have imagined... There are some connections to her prior books but those are not obvious enough to where you’d ruin your reading experience by starting off with this as your first JAH experience. For first timers, this novella is a great introduction to the style of this author.

There is something about the characters that JAH creates that just demand your full attention. It’s not just about the connection you feel with them instantly or the way they are developed; which are both done amazingly well... It’s just that they are so complex that you just are always on the cusp of thinking you’ve figured them all out, then BAM something new is introduced that causes your entire experience to shift.

Had I not read the previous books from this author...Rook & Ronin's story; Ford, Spencer, Merc & Sasha's stories; I would've defined James Fenici as a creepy, obsessive stalker. But now that I know these people, I realize James is acting normal. He's doing what comes naturally. He's tall, dark and deadly....he's an assassin and specializes in poison; he's a pharmacology genius. His only purpose in life is to eliminate his target(s). He's focused, aggressive, calculating and intelligent. He never fails. And he's been derailed by Harper Tate. He's been following her...watching & stalking her for months. He's obsessed with her....but Harper isn't the type to befriend anyone.

She's a quiet girl. She listens rather than talks...pays attention rather than interrupts. Harper Tate has long sun bleached blond hair and warm amber eyes. She's stunning with her heart shaped face and golden bronzed tan. She was born into The Company....a cult-like militia/compound in the back-country of Wyoming and Nebraska, that trains their children to be killers and worse. It's a secret organization that indoctrinates their children with propaganda. Harper, however, was raised with her twin brother on a Yacht all of their eighteen years. Rather than be forced into marriage, she escapes and is on the run...hiding. And when James Fenici enters her life, she does what comes naturally...she runs. But Harper is so alone and lonely and James doesn't get discouraged easily. He's persistent in his obsession of her. They eventually befriend one another.

This novella lays a wonderful foundation of the personalities of Harper and James. But frankly, I like Harper best when she wasn't interested in James. I liked her disinterest of him.

Wow. Just friggin Wow!! I am a HUGE J.A. Huss fan and this novella does not disappoint, it just makes you wish for the end of July RIGHT NOW! I hope the Bend anthology makes its way back for sale, because so far the novellas have been excellent.

We get a sexy sneak peek into J.A.'s new series which sounds fan-freaking-tastic!! Harper is on the run, James is on the job looking for somebody and they happen find each other. The set up is brilliant, just a tiny look into the past of each character, placing them exactly where they are today.

Harper craves connection, tired of being a nobody for the last eleven months and James fits the bill. He is on a bit of a sabbatical, but hasn't totally left the job behind. The novella is steamy, with James being just the right type of alpha to love. His explanation of the transfer of power was an absolute favorite line of mine, as it is so true.

With a set up like this, I cannot wait to read the full novel and get more information on these characters. J.A. Huss's books always leave you wanting more, counting down the days for the next one to release.
