I found myself really relating to what the main character was going through. I thought Amber could have been explored and brought to life a little more. Her character seemed to be brought in for the sole purpose to put a name to what Kelly was doing and give her the idea. She is there but not really there.
The story line is great. I loved the way that the other characters interact with each other. There is a nice dynamic and it shows the different relationships that Kelly has with the different people in her life.
I would definitely recommend this!
Note: This is the story before Behind The Mask, Kelly's sister.
The love story was sincere and very heart-felt. Losing a spouse is never easy, and giving up that kind of love forever is heart wrenching. Given the opportunity to see a dead spouse again? Absolutely! But when is it time to give up what was and see what can be? THis book explores and handles the situation perfectly (And in a really hot way!) Thanx, Robbie!
As far as the characters went, Kelly was a good female lead but it frustrated me how stuck in the past she really was. She mentions how others may see her as selfish for what she’s doing, and honestly I would wholeheartedly agree with that assessment-especially when it comes to Derek and the “condition” she puts on starting a relationship with him. Derek is patient, kind and compassionate and you know he cares for Kelly quite a lot given how long he’s waited for her while giving her unconditional support.
The idea of doing what Kelly is doing to keep her husband alive for her (and her friend Amber as well)…I can understand her doing this the first time given the circumstances of his death, but anything more than that is where I see the selfishness coming in. Not to mention pretty much putting her life at a standstill-as her friends have told her as well. As the story goes on and she starts to see this for herself, I was expecting a whole different outcome than what actually came to pass.
Considering that we don’t really get much back story for Kelly and her husband Jared’s lives before his death, the outcome on Halloween was not expected at all. Plus, after what Derek told her about not wanting to share her when she first told him what was really going on…well, his acquiescence to her condition was a little surprising. Then to have the final arrangement between them that occurs Halloween night-it just felt like it came out of nowhere as the way the story was going, it seemed like a whole different ending was in store. For me, it was hard to reconcile this with all three of their attitudes and what they were saying prior to that final scene.
Come Halloween was a 3-star read for me, and I’d recommend it to contemporary romance fans who like a bit of a twist to their endings. This one is for readers 18+, primarily due to explicit sexual content.
