From the Author
The books of the Portland Storm series are hockey romances, but they go much deeper than the sport of hockey. These books touch on real-world issues such as rape, cancer, miscarriage, bullying, PTSD, grief, addiction, and many other similar subjects. If you have triggers, be aware that these books may very well contain material which could trigger you. That said, I endeavor to tackle these issues with sensitivity and compassion.
Additionally, many readers have requested that I put a TISSUE WARNING on the books in this series. I've received notes from readers about every single book in the series, in which readers tell me how the characters and the story brought them to tears. You may not need tissues for each book--the story line that resonates most for you may not be the one that others responded to in that way--but don't say I didn't warn you.
On that note, I have another warning for you: my hockey players curse like...well...hockey players. And there is a fair amount of sex in these books. If cursing and sex aren't your cup of tea, these books probably won't be, either.

Overview. Nicky is coming back from rehab and spending a year playing with the AHL. He volunteers with light the lamp and the organiser Jessica a lot. It helps to keep him sober and near her. He comes back from team building with the Storm's to find his sister and her 3 kids and a nurse. His sister was diagnosed with ALS and dying. He breaks down and turns to Jessica for help. Jessica is glad to help but want to protect her heart. Some serious decisions are made several times in the story that will keep anyone on their toes. Be ready, life changes fast.
Nicky is making his comeback from addiction, in his professional and personal life. After a rough few years, he finally gets the chance to get back between the pipes for the Portland Storm and he hopes he doesn’t let anyone down this time. On the personal side of things, he has finally gotten to the point where he feels like he can start being honest about his issues and wants to help out more with the Light the Lamp Foundation (Kally’s foundation) since he was helped by a similar program. He has his head on pretty straight and he is in a good place when he is thrown for a loop. His sister, niece and nephews come into town and he isn’t sure if he can handle all that comes with it (I am not going into detail because it is a very large part of the plot and I hate to spoil things for people, but I will say that the tears started to pool here and eventually they just spilled over).
Jessica works for the Portland office of the Light the Lamp Foundation and in doing so she meets with a lot of addicts and having been married to one as well as raised by and with one she has a lot of experience and has been hurt by addicts too many times to count. She has decided that she can never be more than friends with someone with a history of addiction. She is pretty good at keeping that promise to herself, but every time she meets with Nicky about the Foundation she knows that he could test that decision. But when things start to get bad for Nicky she somehow finds herself being the person he turns to when he needs help or just needs to talk. The more time she spends with him, the harder things become for her.
Ok, so I’m stopping there so there are no spoilers, but I will say that the friendship/relationship that grows between these two is great. They seemed to be able to talk to each other about anything and they take their time getting to know each other (asking a lot of geeky questions, which as a geek, I loved). Like I said before it was beautifully written. The beach scene in particular sticks out in my head, it was a great celebration of life and love and it comes across the page beautifully. This book had some humor, some heartache and so much love (Nicky/his niece, his niece/his sister, all the Portland Storm wives) and I want to read it over and over again. Nicky stole my heart. His character, his heart, his humor just got me and I was cheering for him to fight the good fight and show his addiction that he is stronger than it. So now I sit anxiously waiting for Babs’ book and the continuation of the Portland Storm series that I love so much!
Now on to this book-- 'COMEBACK'
I won't go into what this book was all about. That was all explained by the synopsis, and many reviewers here already. IMO- I think they all summed it all up for you a lot better than I probably could, anyway. I will say that if you read this book, come prepared with lots and lots of tissues. You will definately need them, and if you're like me, you'll need them several times throughout this book.
I'd like to qoute what a few reviewers have already stated, because as far as I'm concerned, they hit the nail right on the head when they made these statements:
From Heather F.........
"All of the books in the Portland Storm series have had emotion in them, but none more so than Comeback. This book will make you break out your box of tissues, but it's one that will leave a lasting impression long after you've read the last word."
This is all so true. It's been a day and a half since I read this book, but it's still playing around in my head and it doesn't seem like it's going to be going anywhere any time soon, either.
And from romancereader.....
"This review of "Comeback" is best described as a "4 Kleenex review"! All of the previous books in the Portland Storm series have had intense emotions woven into the story, and several of them have dealt with some serious emotional issues (rape, child sex abuse, etc) but nothing could have prepared me for the emotions of this book. I found myself actually having to put it down and stop reading for a time when the tears made it difficult for me to continue!"
Oh Boy! She got this one right, for sure. There were several times throughout this book that I had to stop to dry my tears, but there were two times where I had to stop for at least twenty minutes or more to sob my heart out, before I could go on reading again. It's just that dang emotional.
But this book isn't all doom and gloom, or sadness. It's also very heart-warming, and there was also a lot of good hearted laughs along the way, too. There are several lessons to be learned in this book, as well. Things like: patience, trust, understanding, loyality, teamwork, forgiveness, will power, and the meaning of true friendship. All of her characters in these stories, and the difficult situations that plague them, are the kind that most of us have either dealt with on a personal level, or knows of someone who has had to experience something simular, in everyday life. Maybe that's why they seem so they seem more real to me.
Of course Catherine Gayle always spins us a beautiful love story by the end. It might not always be a quick, easy romance, but it's always worth waiting for.... that's for sure.
Jessica and Nicky wasn't an easy story to read, at least emotionally, anyway. But I can tell you that it's one that you'll remember for a long, long time. They are both trying to fight through the demons of their past, but with a lot of trials and errors, they finally find their way through it all with a little help from their friends and learning how to trust again. The love and friendship they shared didn't hurt, either. ;)
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of the books in this series, they are all great in their own way.
