For 1979 Steve Martin returned to The Boardinghouse nightclub in San Francisco for his third comedy LP, even though according to Steve when they got the tape they took to to the studio and erased it.
Comedy Is Not Pretty, and admittedly this third LP isn't quite as good as Let's Get Small and Wild & Crazy Guy, in part because at points it is cruder, particularly in Steve's somewhat embarassing sketch on Jackie Onassis. It nonetheless does hold up well, from his accident with a drinking glass onward. His Sound Effects gag is quite funny, and he brings out his Wild & Crazy trademark when he growls that the audience thinks he's A Rubberhead.
Googlephonics, dealing with a subject one usually doesn't think about for comedy (stereo systems), is the most interesting track, in large part because it is almost a botch. Steve blows his lines repeatedly during the sketch, and it is here that the laughs come.
Steve's banjo gets work in two tracks. Cruel Shoes is the title story from the contemporaneous book he authored, while his deft deployment of the banjo shines brightest in the delightful Drop Thumb Medley.
From the taking of histages (the Iran hostage crisis gave the album an eerie topicality at the time of its 1979 release) through Steve's tips on becoming a millionaire, Comedy may not be Pretty, but it is still funny.

This is Steve Martin back when he did stand up all the time. This is his 2nd most classic album.

However I did have a problem with buying it. They were selling it 2 ways. One was the regular mp3 for $9.99 the other was the CD by mail that included instarip (or whatever they call it) the mp3 in your cloud account right away all for half price $4.50. I took the better deal of course. Listened to the file then a few days later got notice that the CD would not be delivered and my account credited. Cool I thought till I looked at my bank account. Right after the charge was deducted a new charge for $8.50 not consented to by me was there. After I complained this charge was removed but the acct rep insisted that I MUST have ordered the product and didn't remember. For a price not even listed?

This third album in your Steve Martin collection is almost as good as the first two. Steve Martin had a perfect comedy style when he was starting out to be the enormous success he has become. I call it the bowling style. He sets up the pins and knocks them down over and and over again. He makes sure to set up each joke perfectly. And every punch line is well rehearsed and delivered perfectly. His timing is impecable. Anyone wanting to study a comedian and just copy a style would do well to study Steve Martin. He and Bill Cosby are arguably the two best ever.

I first listened to this on 8 track when I was a kid and found this a classic rightaway. Martin shows that his witty humor can last into the ages. I highly recomend this to anyone looking for a good laugh. I've gone through some of my old comedy tapes and some were not as funny as I remembered, but Steves comedy is timeless and sophistication of the 90's can't ruin this. a definate must get, humor that doesn't requiring swearing and all the other acts today in order to be funny.

With his movie career starting up and other obligations, it is clear that Steve Martin was not on his game at the Boarding House the night that this was recorded. Unlike his first two albums, there were multiple times where I just had to scratch my head and figure out if I was supposed to laugh or not. With that said, however, this is still a funny album. Steve is a funny guy, and I laughed just as hard in parts as I did during the best moments of "Let's Get Small" or "A Wild & Crazy Guy." If you are a general comedy fan, this might not be for you, but any true Steve Martin fan needs to own this.

I bought the c.d. a year ago from a local record store. They had it playing and I asked what it was. Luckily, I found the only copy they had. I bought it, took it home, and I was amazed. I laughed my butt off. I haven't heard his other albums, but I just thought this one was hillarious!! If you enjoy comedy, BUY THIS RECORD NOW!

Steve Martin at his near peak. Just before he exploded all over America. This album brings back many memories and is still very funny today. It is incomplete however with the many manic moves that Martin did when performing. Truly a sight to behold and this recording calls back many surreal images that were lost in the recesses of my memory. An EXCELLENT buy if you are a fan of Martins.

I USED TO LISTEN TO THIS YEARS AGO AND GOT TO WHERE I COULD RECITE SOME OF THE ALBUM BY HEART. I JUST HAD TO GET IT SO THAT MY FRIENDS COULD LISTEN TO IT AND UNDERSTAND WHERE I WAS GETTING MY ONE LINERS. STEVE MARTIN GOES DOWN THERE WITH BILL COSBY FOR COMEDY. LOVE THIS AND HIS OTHERS.
