But none of this will stop me from reading Prescott's books. They are almost always super-suspenseful and fun to read. I'm very happy to see another bunch of new books from him. Reading his books will keep me busy in the late evenings before I drift off to sleep!
Thank you Amazon for another really good, and inexpensive book!!!
The main theme of this book is guilt and its punishments. All three primary characters -- Erica, Robert, and Ben -- hold themselves guilty for past actions and decisions. Their responses differ: one flees, another withdraws, the third suffers unending torments. Are these torments real? Are they psychosis? Can they be assuaged, and, if so, how? In fact, can guilt be assuaged and, if so, how? The three characters must face their guilt before they can move on, and if they cannot face their guilt, they cannot move on.
The book reaches back in a very literate way to the mythologies of the ancient and medieval worlds, contrasting them with current attitudes towards psychoses and mental illness. Anyone versed in ancient Greek and Roman mythologies will catch deep meaning in the apparent ramblings of Robert. Those who are particularly astute might understand clues to the underlying mystery, feel even more compassion for the victims of the story, and come away from the book with a deeper appreciation of the author and his craft in modernizing a very ancient tale.
Very suspenseful and very human, with human foibles and wickedness. The in depth look into a disturbed, broken mind with mythical reasoning and madness was the hook for me. If you enjoy a good chase, twists and turns and some very tense moments you will enjoy this read.
Something I realized while reading this book was that I no longer have to download samples of Michael Prescott's work - I just buy them. I usually do a sample of each book before I buy it, and had done so with my first few Prescott stories - no longer necessary!
I eagerly await the next story and I wanted to mention I truly appreciate the affordable pricing. When you read several books a week like I do, it adds up quickly! Thank you!!
