Maris Mabry, the heroine, has The Sight, and receives a late night "message" from the estranged aunt who helped raise her, psychic, clairvoyant and tarot card reader, Alva Mabry, "calling" her back to Alcina Cove, her hometown.
Detective Dan Stauffer receives a phone call in the wee hours of the morning telling him there's a dead body and a scene he needs to investigate at Alva Mabry's home--it's the nonagenarian, Alva Mabry herself. When he arrives, he finds Alva's body seated at the table where she usually met her clients, with her tarot cards spread out in front of her, one card still held in her hand, the Priestess. Dan has had a couple of paranormal sightings too, but he's buried the memory of their darkness deep within. While investigating the scene at the Mabry home, he receives another call, asking him to return to the station because there is a woman there asking for him, Maris Mabry, to whom he's immediately attracted.
When it's discovered that Alva's death was due to poisoning, what follows is most definitely a well-written and intriguing mystery, since we're told that Maris is Alva's only living family member, which immediately makes her a suspect. Her attraction to Dan matches his attraction to her and for a police detective, is ill-advised, yet although they've only known each other a couple of days, they can't stop what they feel for one another, even though it endangers Dan's objectivity. Maris is somewhat of an enigma, she knows that she's the last surviving Mabry, and when it's discovered that Aunt Alva left her three million dollar estate to be divided among any remaining living family members, the police see that as her motive, and because Dan's feelings for her seem to cloud his objectivity, he's removed from the case.
The plot thickens when there's a break-in at Dan's home and an attempt made on Maris' life. As far as mysteries goes, this one certainly kept me guessing until the end, and I truly enjoyed the paranormal aspect of this well-crafted, well-written novel.
