I was very excited to be able to review this Comet M10CD micro-cut shredder. It is quite a bit heavier (better built) than the Royal shredder I've been using. The Comet weights just about 30 pounds. It's got some decent roller wheels on it that work well. The wheels on my Royal never really worked very well... each wheel would stick in its own direction so you ended up sliding rather than rolling the shredder anywhere it had to go.
What is most striking about the Comet shredder is how quiet it is. Unlike the Royal shredder, which has a shrill and very loud noise when in use, the Comet has much quieter and lower frequency sound. Chalk that up to a more powerful motor and more substantial cutting mechanism.
The shredder also does an excellent job of making such micro-cuts of your documents that security worries will be a distant memory.
Provided with the shredder is a generous amount of lubricating oil. Depending on how much you use the shredder will determine how often you need to lubricate the cutting blades. But don't worry about having to get anywhere near the blades because all you have to do is get a sheet of paper and drizzle some oil on it in broad sweeping "S" shapes the length of the paper then insert the paper into the shredder. Just going through the blades with oil on the paper will get the job done. Don't overdue it with the oil either. You do not have to drench the paper, just a light squiggle of oil. Might be best not to attempt this over carpet or floors... or at least put something underneath in case you miscalculate.
The Comet M10CD seems well-built. I cannot speak to the long-term reliability of it yet as I've not had it for very long. But I will certainly update my review if need be.
For now, all is well in shredder land. It's contentedly munching away on my documents and doing so in a relatively peaceful and quiet way. It's a good choice for a small office or home. If you are planning on shredding copious amounts of documents every day, day in and day out. I"d advise getting a commercial duty shredder. But for moderate use this should perform well for many years... at least I hope so.
I was provided a sample for review.
It is quiet and fast.
As it says it will it does stop after some minutes of continuous operation. Now that the big job is over that will probably never happen again.
About the only negative - and a minor one is that if filled too full shreds will spill out the back of the bin.
Also the instructions are minimal. They don't talk about shredding staples or paperclips. Staples go right through - paperclips I did not try.
There is also no information about when or even if to lubricate. I have been doing it every 2-3 bags.
Bottom line review on the product is don't by this one. Spend a little more and get a unit that works longer than 6 months and is backed by the company that makes them.
I won't give this one star, because it did take two years to implode. But I certainly expected it to last long enough to have to empty the shredder bin. Never again, Comet.
