For post-surgery, due to the massive incision, I looked for an alternative to hard plastic e-collars and found the Comfy Cone. It works quite well and I am extremely pleased. The only slight issue is that due to the weight of the buckle on his collar, the top where the sides of the Comfy Collar meet, tend to slip down under his chin. Other than that, Hunter barely seems to notice the Comfy Cone and sleeps quite comfortably with it in place.
HERE ARE SOME RECOMMENDATIONS: Before using, (1) position the Comfy Cone so that it is open and under your pet's chin. Do not close it yet around your pet's face. Allow your pet to sniff and explore the Comfy Cone (2) speak calmly to your pet while introducing the Comfy Cone and anytime you secure it (3) secure it while speaking gently and offering verbal praise to your pet (4) if your pet is resistant, offer a 'high value' treat(small pieces cut up, cooked chicken or hot dogs) only after the Comfy Cone is secured, and (4)frequently take time to reach inside the cone to rub your pet's head & offer praise while the Comfy Cone is on. Any pet will buck and resist the Comfy Cone if you approach them too quickly with a foreign object that obscures their peripheral vision. Make it a pleasant, calm experience and reinforce it with praise.
I found the Comfy Cone online in an article by someone whose dog had the same surgery and the same issues with the vet-provided e-collar. From the moment I put it on my dog he has been GREAT with it! The cone is not as big as a plastic e-collar and I was afraid my dog may still be able to get to his leg, but he never tried and it is big enough to make attempts very difficult. The cone is very flexible so he can sleep in total comfort. Even though he does not have the ability to see out of the sides like the plastic, I think it is better because they know their limits in these vs. the plastic where they can see around but then bump into everything and get confused.
This collar is the best thing going. If your dog needs to be in an e-collar for an extended amount of time I would definitely get this collar. I also like that it does not get all nasty like the plastic ones. It can fold back while they eat and it is easy to wipe down. I will have this forever for any future use with either of my dogs. I wish more vets recommended these collars they really are the best!!! And the price just can't be beat!
I got the large and I have a boxer, with a 21-22 inch neck. The XL probably would have worked too; he seemed kinda in between sizes, but it was ten bucks more, so I went with the large. Worked out well and I can tighten or loosen it still.
