Coming of Age in Africa: Initiation in the Bwa Village of Dossi
The young men and women of the N'Kambi clan in the village of Dossi prepare for the celebration that will mark their passage from the world of children to the world of adults. The senior elders of the clan sacrifice chickens on the shrine of Lanle to ask for the spirit's blessings. Young men fashion new hemp costumes for the masks, and dye them red. They paint the masks with red, white, and black pigments they make themselves, and along with the young women they perform in the village plaza to celebrate their coming of age.
