When families decide to move, children must too. 13-year-old Rosalie doesn't know the language. She misses family and friends that are an ocean away. It's 1949, so there is no texting! Phone calls are too expensive. Letters are the only way to keep in touch with the life she left an ocean away. Rosalie was sad about leaving so much behind, but mostly she was worried that she was leaving herself behind. "Coming to America," begins on board the Queen Elizabeth where rough seas make going upstairs feel like going downstairs! Join 13-year-old Rosalie as she crosses an ocean and struggles to find her way in a new world. This book is on the Mamie Eisenhower library Project List, and will inspire readers of all ages to discover the stories about how their family members came to America.

Have you read any of the Dear America books from Scholastic? Coming to America: A Girl Struggles to Find Her Way in the New Word reminds me of the Dear America book series, except that Coming to America is a true story whereas the Dear America books are historical fiction.

Coming to America is about Rosalie, a young teenager who moves with her parents and older brother from Switzerland to New York City in 1949. The story begins during the voyage across the ocean and ends on a positive note more than a year after Rosalie's arrival in the U. S.

The story is from Rosalie's point of view. It takes the reader through her emotional adjustment and as well as adjusting to city life. The story shows Rosalie's resilience, and it shows her starting to bloom in her new home.

Coming to America is an excellent read for anyone older elementary and up, including seasoned adults. It is also an excellent family read-aloud. I homeschooled my children, and if I was still homeschooling this book would be on my kids' reading list.

Coming to America tells the story of Rosalie, a 13-year-old girl in the late 1940’s who is leaving the only life she’s ever known in Switzerland to carve out a new life in America. From seasickness on the rolling seas of the Atlantic, to seeing Lady Liberty for the first time, to trying to master new friendships and schoolwork while learning a new language, the book paints a picture of the struggles that people went through to build a new life America, all told through the eyes of a 13-year-old girl. This book is an easy read that will particularly appeal to girls in the upper elementary grades on up through adulthood. A great book for anyone who wants to ponder what life was like during that time in America after WWII.

This book made me think about how things were when my grandmother's came over from Italy as young women. The hardships were not something they spoke about but I imagine they were the same types of things Rosalie found when she came from Switzerland. Language, clothes, feeling sad for having left family in Italy. Both of my grandmother's were like Rosalie's father. We are here in America so we will speak English, not Italian. I can understand their wanting to acclimate themselves into the American way of life, however, all of the grandchildren would have benefited by learning Italian. Would definitely recommend this book, especially if you had someone in your family come to America before or directly after WW II.

In Coming to America, Diana Erbio shares her grandmother's brave tale of emigrating from Switzerland to the United States as a young girl with her family after WWII. Erbio's creative imagery captures what life was like for her ancestors both in Switzerland and then in New York City as new immigrants. As exciting as moving to to America may seem, Erbio describes the challenges of a young teenage girl who doesn't understand the language, customs and the hustle and bustle of a big city. I enjoyed reading this book and have now given it to my teenage children to read as well.

A very poignant coming of age story about a teen girl adjusting to life in America. A great read for any age group. I literally was in tears throughout the final chapter.

This is a well written story of a young girl leaving the comfort of her homeland only to face the fears and uncertainties of building a new life in a strange unknown new country. Enjoyed it very much.

I didn't see anywhere that it said this was a story and not a book. I settled down to read about a lifetime of their family and bang - the book ended after a year and a half. What is there is good but I expected a full book.
