The Marvel of the Sacred

Quite a few of us might have scuffed up a bit of dust following a spiritual path but we are all afternoon strollers compared to Lex Hixon.

I read, marked, and reread to disintegration my first copy of this book and am treating the second better if not reading it so closely.

There is no human form of consumption that might be an apt metaphor for how Hixon seems to understand a spiritual practice.

If we were amoebas, "engulf" would fit but we are not. Let's just go with the pedestrian--he comes to understand deeply and relates his understanding clearly and as near to complete as anything short of 26 volumes might contain.

Each chapter treats its own form of spiritual practice. Each has its own special virtue but some sections are especially moving: one retells the story of the lost oxen a Zen classic which is here is told with beautiful graphics) and other comes from letters from a young girl who is dying. The first prompts and the second sustains the Buddha smile--a set of the mouth as near a perfect icon of understanding and acceptance as is possible to ever seen on earth.

Wow, there is so much Truth shared in this book. I really enjoyed it and found it to be a nice road map, of sorts, of the path to awakening. All paths are welcome! "Coming Home" is written in such a beautiful style and it's very easy to grasp formerly abstract thoughts and ideas.

The last chapter, "Designing an Experiment in Contemplation," was worth the price of the book. The author explains in very simple terms the four dimensions of contemplation and how they are like the Advaita Vedanta analysis of consciousness...waking, dreaming, dreamless sleep, and Turiya. Turiya = primal radiant Awareness, Oneness.

My heart sang reading of Mr. Hixon's experience (pgs. 207-209) with the "golden radiance .... bright as snow in sunlight....a sense of union....crossing the threshold into nothing but pure transparency and universal awareness..." If those words speak to you and stir your soul, then you'll find this a fabulous read.

This is the first work by Lex Hixon that I read, some years ago. I have given it as a gift to certain friends over the years, and just gave one to a friend going into a Doctor of Divinity program. I like the selection of spiritual orientations or paths that are the chapters. I like very much that the author writes from a living first hand perspective in each chapter, though the information may be more objective. This is from someone with real experience, not just doing a survey of doctrine or practices. I use this myself as a resource over time for deep and practical spiritual work.

This is the best book I have read both as guide to comparative religion in general and as an explanation of and guide to the goal of all genuine religious activity; enlightenment. It has great breadth, but also great depth. These traits complement one another, the breadth refining the reader's understanding of enlightenment beyond cultural specificities, and the purity that is revealed by this process coming back to reveal the unique virtue of each tradition that is examined. I am currently enrolled as a double major in philosophy and psychology, and reccomend this book as the best all-in-one guide to the experience of enlightenment that I have encountered.
