Ms. Budden takes the story blocks of many and weaves it into a single patchwork quilt that is the character and story of Kelly. Warning: As the reader, you are taken along on the roller coaster ride of high emotional ups and dark, devastating downs. There are twists and turns as Kelly tells her story in first person. It is not an easy read. Yet, I could not put it down.
Kelly's life starts out fairly unremarkable, but once she is in college, things dramatically change. Kelly faces issues of rape, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and infidelity. But all the "bad" in her life is somehow balanced by equally "good" relationships enriched with unconditional love.
It is a very troubing story. But it is also a sweet story as Kelly learns to listen to small, quiet voice of God. He speaks truth in a way she can accept and God guides her into finding the strength to go for the "Happy Ever After" that all of us desire and deserve.
I would find it all quite unbeievable without the thread of faith that weaves in and out making the patchwork of circumstnaces into something believable, meaningful and worthwhile.
I don't know if perhaps the story could have been better told as an anthology of women's individual stories. It is not a mechanically perfect written account. But overall, I like that Ms. Budden supports the cause and gives a voice to the victims through this story of Kelly, and it is for this reason I give it 5 stars.
Another amazing book from Norma Budden. She writes amazing characters. I never want to put down one of her books when I pick it up.
Coming Unglued: A Mother's Journey into Hell deals with a harsh subject in overall delicate way. I do not normally read books that have abuse as the subject matter. Having read An Affair to Remember (Freedom in Love) by Ms. Budden, I knew that her writing style was one that treads lightly on things of a more "intimate" nature. Thus I challenged myself to read this book.
I'm glad that I did. I kept reading until I could no longer read it, then I picked it back up again and again. I just had to know how the story ended.

I hated to like this book, because the main character, Kelly, was put through the ringer.Read more
