Editorial Reviews

2011 release, the sixth album from the veteran British Prog rockers. This album is the debut recording of Luke Machin, a stunning 22 year old guitar player who has taken fans by storm at gigs around Europe in the past 18 months. Despite his youth, Luke is heavily influenced by the great progressive rock guitarists from Francis Dunnery to Andy Latimer, Allan Houldsworth and Daniel Gildenlow. Comm has taken two years to write and record. The cover artworks marks a return to the popular partnership between The Tangent and Belarussian artist Ed Unitsky.

Having not really been a fan of the Tangent in the past, I reluctantly picked this one up after many great reviews and top 10 lists for 2011. Glad that I did. This is by far the best and most cohesive album the Tangent has ever put out. A concept album about communication in various ways, it carries the listeners through the inter-webs and Marconi wireless across time and oceans to a feast for the ears. Just amazing is all I can say. The playing is excellent in all facets. Lyrics are inspired and inventive. The Andy Tillson vocals are a little different, but compliment the material in a positive way. Production is top notch, especially considering that it was recorded and mixed in a home studio. Certainly a top 10 of prog for the year! Fans of Yes, Rush, and the Flower Kings will find much to love here.

I own the first three tangent projects and I like them all, but I can't say that they are in the same league as the flower kings projects. I was so surprised because this album is absolutely incredible. It has some of the best instrumental compositions in progressive music. The guitars and keyboards are truly great. The earlier Tangent projects are really good and progressive, but sometimes I yearn for more lengthy instrumental passages. "Comm" has lengthy instrumental passages AND great composition. Even the vocal parts are more convincing and integrated into the fabric of the music than previous Tangent projects.

If you are a progressive music fan, you can't go wrong with the album even if you are NOT a fan of THE Tangent's earlier works. An added bonus is that the production quality is first rate!

Nothing groundbreaking here, just classic Tangent prog. If you enjoyed their past releases you will surely enjoy this one as well. Discovered them on a local college radio show by accident about 5 years ago or so.

I've been a huge progressive music fan for over 35 years and have always seen the Tangent getting great reviews and high ratings here and on various major prog websites. I decided to take the plunge and buy COMM. Well, I wish I had my money back. I was hugely disappointed by this disk. While musically there are some good moments, such as most of the opening track,The Wiki Man and Titanic Calls Carpathia, the other tracks did nothing for me, especially the bizarre cover of Genesis' classic Watcher of the Skies. The other issue, and it's a big one, are the vocals. Simply put they are poor, detracting immensely from the music. There are parts in every song where the lead vocals are simply out of key and weak.

Overall, wish I had stayed away from The Tangent. Not Good.
