This book is a rare find. However, it has a very narrow focus. If you don't have a connection to the military I don't think you will like this. The book strikes new ground in its approach to the subject of mission command. I know those words mission command for sure narrows the audience reading this down to army people. I think the book is a must read for any field grade or higher officer. The book for sure should be read for all or aspiring division commanders. The author does a great job of vocalizing current day doctrine and experience in division operations better than any manual.
The book starts out very slow. It goes through some history tales of various division commanders over the past 100 years. That section could have been shortened. Hang in there until you get to page 214. It really picks up there. The author shows how army divisions has changed. He documents extremely well how divisions have switched from an autocratic mode to a teamwork or network approach. The author has examples from exercises or recent wars to prove his point. I do think non-Army people might pick up things from the book if they can wade through the lingo. The documented lessons on mission command, use of decision points, and other things could easily be used by any large organization.
