This album should be in everyone's collection. Seriously, what a piece of vinyl. I've heard bits and pieces of this record, but I recently discovered it streaming and when I stream that much, it's time to buy vinyl. It's moody, sultry, bizarre and perfect. Sonic Youth was right, this is a must have.

Lovely collaboration between Ms Fontaine and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, falling somewhere between Edith Piaf and Bjork.
Worth it for the title track alone. It also sounds especially good on vinyl!

I became interested in Fontaine after seeing movies where her music was featured like: "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Fat Girl", but this isn't jazzy. Its weird and offbeat...like Kraftwerk.

...I love this album. Total classic, a great experiment in crossing Brigitte's expansive take on pop/chanson with the similarly wide-ranging sensibilities of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. It's by turns lilting, probing, sparse, and haunting. I had an earlier CD pressing of this and was very much looking forward to replacing it with Superior Viaduct's new vinyl issue.
Well, as seems to be increasingly the case these days, the vinyl buyer gets screwed. That's not to say this isn't a nice pressing: It is. Thick, paste-on sleeve; clean, heavyweight vinyl. There's an insert with the lyrics on it. And it sounds fantastic. But if you want to spend less on the CD, you get the addition of notes written by the always interesting Richie Unterberger and two additional tracks.
I just don't get why labels (and Superior Viaduct is a repeat offender) seek to punish vinyl buyers – who more often are the dedicated music consumers willing to pay a bit – by making newly written notes and additional tracks inaccessible. Don't they understand that we're the ones who most want to learn more about these projects? I mean, for the notes, all they have to do is offer a PDF on their website or include a photocopy of the notes with the LP. For the extra tracks, just add them to the digital download (which this album does not have -- groan). Is that so hard? Are they so greedy as to insist we buy both?
So, I'd probably recommend buying the CD issue: you get more notes and more tracks.
I know some folks are gonna give me the standard "You shouldn't give this album a bad review just because a few things are missing from the package" comments. Please keep in mind that, with reissues, it is most helpful to not only review the music but the presentation and the value it gives you for your dollar. In this case, for the vinyl buyer, BIG FAIL.

Brigitte Fontaine has had a long and stellar career as a singer of avant-garde music, writer, poet and actress. She collaborates with the illustrious avant-garde jazz group, Art Ensemble of Chicago, on this album. Two standout tracks, Comme à la Radio and Lettre à Monsieur le chef de gare de la tour Carol, are worth the cost of the album. Eclectic!

Wahnsinn

Einige Lieder erinnern an VU and Nico.
