The only (potential) negative to these rolls I have found is that they will not fit in my FoodSaver in the size they were shipped as. To me, this is a non-issue as it only takes about 5 minutes to roll enough onto a 3/4" PVC pipe to fit into the machine, with the leftover (probably about 30 feet) being left on the roll and stored for later use. Considering the amount of money you are saving over the ridiculous price of the brand name bags, I will gladly spend an extra few minutes "charging" my rolls to be used at a later date.
EDIT: I went ahead and checked the thickness of both the FoodSaver brand bags and the Commercial Bargains brand ones. Both bags measured exactly .28mm thick using a digital micrometer that's accurate to the thousandth of an inch. Definitely no difference in thickness.
Tip: I absolutely recommend double-sealing both ends of your bags. This is true for both this product and the authentic Foodsaver brand bags that come with the machine. Each seal has about a 10% chance of leaking within the first couple of weeks, so any given bag has a 20% chance of leaking if it only has one seal at each end. If each end has two seals, the probability of failure drops to 2%.
I bought a brand new "FoodSaver GameSaver Deluxe" in June 2015. In July I also bought 2 orders of these Universal Vacuum Bags 8" bag rolls (4 rolls in total) and back in June when I bought the GameSaver I initially ordered 2 orders of 11" and 8" bags (4 rolls in total). My wife and I canned almost 300 jars from the garden and filled a 15.6 CF chest freezer with vacuum sealed bags of more garden veggies along with other things we purchased in bulk dry and vacuum bagged. So I really think I have the experience and have fully tested this product under normal everyday use for a summer of gardening in order to give this product this review.
First of all, I wonder why the reviewer who gave the tip that you should probably double seal both ends of these bags because they have about a 20% chance of seal failure with just one seal per end but still gave it 5 stars even with a stated 2% failure rate with a double end seal. Is this acceptable? Is this how the product is designed to perform?
When I used a brand new GameSaver, and used it properly according to the instructions and then go to the freezer and find one after another bag of vegetables with a visually perfect seal on both ends and air leaking into the bag and my food getting freezer burn on it, then I have to say that the bags are either defective or they are just not a very good product.
Here's the control for the argument. The GameSaver Deluxe FoodSaver GameSaver Deluxe Vacuum Sealing Kit came with an assortment of FoodSaver brand bags to get me started and probably because FoodSaver wanted it's customers to experience their brand of bags. The clincher in this review is that none of the FoodSaver brand bags in the freezer have lost their seal, only the Universal Vacuum Bags I am reviewing here.
FoodSaver brand bags do cost substantially more than these Universal Vacuum Bags, but the FoodSaver bags always work while these Universal bags do not always work. I have read the other reviews; they are what prompted me to go ahead and use these off brand bags. I guess I just don't understand how the average review is as high as it is. I have definitely found them unworthy of such praise. Maybe they used to be good and lately the quality has fallen. I don't know. All I know is after all the time, money, and work of putting up garden produce for the winter only to find the bags having seal problems, I will spring for the real-deal and buy FoodSaver brand products from now on. Just think if you put away a hog or side of beef or that seasonal venison only to find as you dig down in the freezer the bags filling with air. Maybe these bags are better suited for an actual commercial vacuum sealer like your local butcher shop uses. I don't know, but I can't afford one of those and think that the FoodSaver GameSaver sealer works fine and is properly suited for exactly what we are using it for. The Universal bags are supposed to work with this device just like the name brand bags, but they don't.
So here's my review. Take it for what it's worth; I don't review lightly. This review will be duplicated for the two rolls of 11" and 8" bags I also purchased this summer.
(1.) I have read where some have said they thought these were thinner than the "Food-Saver" brand bags. So far I have not been able to find what the
"freezer / boil in bag" Food-Saver thickness is as it seems the thickest of all the Food-Saver Brand bags. But to my feel and experiencing using them, the commercial universal Vacuum Bags I received are slightly thicker than the name brand.
(2.) Some have said they cannot get them to work with their Food-Saver brand Vacuum Sealer machines. I am using a Food-Saver V3240, and so far, have not run into any issues with the vacuum function or sealing. Now.....depending on what you are sealing, and if your items have any hard or sharp edges, you may run into problems with any bag. If I am sealing something that has exposed hard or sharp edges, (i.e. ribs with bones exposed) I have always had good luck making a sleeve with a section of vacuum bag and not seal the ends, and then place that into a bag to seal. This way, you are giving double protection for sharp or hard edges. Also, I tried some of these on my daughters machine. She has a different name brand from mine and it is an older unit. Hers after heat sealing the edge, I could with a little effort pull the edges back apart. But If after it vacuum sealed the bag I heat sealed again on the same line, once cooled I could not pull the sections apart. It gave a better heat seal. So I am guessing it could be because the bags are a little thicker. Or, because her unit is an older one. Regardless, this is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars. Because without truly knowing the condition of her machine, or because there are possible differences in vacuum strength between differing brands of machines, these may not work in all machines. So I will give a 4 star rating.
(3.) I've read where some have said these bags weren't as good as the name brands. As I have said, I have used these for over a month now. 50 or 60 packages in the deep freeze with these bags. So far, (as of this morning) none have lost their vacuum. Four different packages with different veggies I have boiled in the bag. No issues. For me, these bags are just as good as the name brands.
They are listed as being 3.5 mills thick. BPA free, Boil-In-Bag and Microwaveable safe. Same as the name brands. They are a great price, especially for the amount you receive, and they work for me.
