This is a great resource for our ESL tutors and students at the Literacy Council of Frederick County. We also use" the "99 Essential Business Idioms". Our first goal is teaching conversational English and this publication is full of everyday language phrases by native speakers. It is very valuable in our teaching.

“117 Most Common English Idioms and Phrasal Verbs” is very useful for learning what common English-language idioms and phrasal verbs mean. It is very simple to find the idiom you are wondering about, because the entries are all arranged in alphabetical order.

The guide provides the idiom, followed by its meaning. Then, 2 or 3 examples of the idiom’s usage are provided. The meanings and examples are all top-notch, and give an excellent overview of the idiom, its definition, and how it is typically used.

The only shortcoming to this guide is the lack of explanation of how certain idioms came to be. Many people learning English as an additional language are certainly interested in what the idioms mean and how they are used, but they also want to know why the idiom came into existence. This information would have really fleshed out each entry, rather than leaving the entries seem somewhat incomplete.

This has come in very handy for my partner from Eastern Europe as I naturally used idioms all the time. The English language has always been a challenge for her when we use terms like "I'm all ears." Even I was unaware there were so many to learn but it has now allowed my partner to comfortably understand many of the confusing phrases that had previously baffled her. I think it will also come in handy as a guide.

I bought this book for my teenage foster daughter who is in love with English class and is preparing to take college-course writing classes in high school. I am so proud of her and for Christmas bought her a variety of eBooks with writing tips and tricks. This one, she has informed me, is fun to read and helpful.

The format is simple, easy to navigate, and appropriate for kids over the age of 13. The materials is well organized and easy to use. She actually helps tutor foreign exchange students on the English language and uses this book as a guide for some of her private classes. She thoroughly enjoys how easy it is to use and has recommended it to a few of her friends who are working on their English. One French girl is doing very well with the book and a Chinese boy is also finding it very interesting.

It's very basic in the fact that it focuses on frequently used words and phrases. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for for my daughter, but she enjoys it nevertheless. She especially enjoys using it during her English courses with foriegn exchange children. And I think that's basically what it was created for. It'd be a good guide for kids just beginning to learn about idioms. But it's also a good guide for people attempting to learn the English language.

Overall for a little more than $2.00 it was a really good buy. Would I buy it again? Perhaps for a foriegn exchange student, but I don't think I'd buy it for a writing-loving person who just wants more guides to proper writing.

Another practical resource from the Author. I really am getting the most out of the Authors' series of works. Easy, applicable and just a downright pleasure in using this book.My students tend to forget that Phrasal verbs make up for a big part of everyday English. This nook is up to date and most importantly PRACTICAL as there are too many phrasal verb books out there that are just too outdated. At the end of the day, you cannot go wrong with this book. And at the kindle price, its a steal...

This book has a lot of idioms and phrases. It offered sentences to illustrate the idioms which is very helpful. As a former ESL teacher, I would have liked to have had this book while I was teaching. The only thing I would add to the book would be situational instructions on when these idioms are most appropriate. Some idioms may not be appropriate to use in a business setting for instance. Great book though.

This is a good book for reviewing idioms with ESL students. It provides the list, the meaning and some examples. A good reference book for classes at a very affordable price. It could use some cartoons to spice it up.
