Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Designed for the parent who wants to avoid wading through theories and paradigms of parenting, Common Sense Parenting offers just that?solid, easy-to-read common sense. Burke, who developed the Common Sense Parenting Training Program at Boys Town, and Herron, a former community director of Boys Town, are big on recognizing consequences, both positive and negative, and staying calm. Several aspects of the Boys Town training programs are here, most very simple and easy to follow. The authors support the use of contracts and charts and give samples of what these should look like. A very good book that promotes bare-bones skills for all parents; recommended for public libraries.?Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, Pa.

In addition to buying the book, I took the Common Sense Parenting class at Boys Town. I was assured that it was helpful and appropriate for parents of teens.

If your teen is fairly compliant, then this book may be helpful to you. If your teen is motivated by "watch a movie on Friday night with Mom," this book will work for you. But, if your teen is not motivated this way, save your money.

I wish that I had been introduced to this book when my child was 5 years old. My child is now 14 years old and defiant. The techniques in this book don't work for a defiant child.

If you have small children, do buy this book. But, if your child/ren is/are older and difficult, look for something else.

The following review was done by the National Parenting Center upon awarding the Common Sense Parenting Book as well as the Common Sense Parenting Audiotape with its coveted Seal of Approval.
"When it comes to reading advice about parenting, what we've discovered is that parents like to be spoken to in a direct, common sense manner. No need to use flowery or highbrowed language, just give me some tips and I'll take it from there. Like the name implies, this book and the like-titled audiotape delivers the goods. Common sense tips and good ideas presented in an easy to read and listen to format. Parents mentioned that they really liked the written exercises which serve to help reinforce what you've learned. Here is a logical sensible approach to parenting, featuring good examples that our parents give a thumbs ups."

I gave this book as a gift because a school counselor friend of mine recommended it. She had found it very helpful for parents struggling with difficult behaviors. It was easy to read, focuses on teaching skills, and covers a wide age range. My friend who received the book also gave me very positive feedback.

This excellent book offers parents solutions to common problems, as well as tips for positive guidance and effective praise. The program seems to be designed to encourage parents to expand on their current parenting techniques, rather than abandoning current practices in favor of a "new method." It boosts parents' esteem as well as giving tips on how to boost children's self-esteem. It sits on my shelf next to "1-2-3 Magic!"
