Editorial Reviews

I personally experienced Dr.Tom's one day workshop on Reengineering Purchasing which was the bestexperience of my purchasing career bar none. Many companies are enamored with technology and lose sight of thestrategy. Any purchasing dummy can learn tactics and be a fire fighter. The strategists are rare but their gains can be enormous. Dr. Tom is atrue and dynamic strategic thinker whose ideas are timeless and righton. Buy this book and use it. Make everyone in your department read itand discuss it.

Dr. Tom has written a classic for anyone who wants to establishrelationships along the entire supply chain. His straight-forwardmanner and stories are outstanding! I particularly enjoyed all theparts about building supplier relationships and tales of purchasingdepartment bureaucratic culture. An excellent reference book for alllevels of professionals. If I could give it six stars, I would!

Dr. Tom has written a brilliant supply chain book on relationshipbuilding. His writing style makes the concepts clear to novices andexperts alike. His practical advice is both enjoyable and pertinent. Itis a very easy read and I could not put the book down until I wasfinished. This is a must read for any supply chain, purchasing orcontracting professional. I rate it 5 stars. Dr. Tom's background is asequally impressive as his scholarship.

Dr. DePaoli clearly has loads of real-world experience, and it comesthrough from the first chapter of this book which stresses theimportance of relationships over everything else. The format is readable and easy to apply. Other books have more depth on process, but thestrength of Common Sense Purchasing is the distilled wisdom that isextremely worthwhile. It's a great gift for executives outsideprocurement organizations to understand a smart approach to the field.Highly recommended!

From the Author

One of my favorite mistakes is when we wentthrough a disciplined and arduous supplier selection process.  The selection process was done by a crossfunctional team. All the numbers were favorable and the supplier had goodreferences and was eager to get started. The total cost of ownership savings were well over $1,000,000.  We did all our homework and were veryconfident of our decision. The new supplier promised to provide a supplierrepresentative on site for 20-30 hours per week. We even had a celebration.  The supplier representative started and Ithought that things were going well. Unfortunately our maintenance personneljust could not get along with the representative and conflicts arose.  It was more a personality issue rather thancompetence. Luckily the supplier had another representative available whoreplaced the initial representative and was well liked by our internalcustomers. The lesson learned was that once again, relationships are not onlycritical, but "king" in supply management.  We added to our supplier selection process aninterview (performance based) of any on-site representatives by our internal customers, like maintenance, and a reference check and discussion with other customersabout the on-site representative.  Alsodon't celebrate prematurely.
