This book is laid out in an easy to understand and act on manner. Love the "Strategic Marking System" and pieces focused on giving the reader more confidence.
It goes all the way back to my high school days where I won the state championship in both debate & oratory & received a 4-year scholarship
to the University of Iowa. That led to a career as an on-air news correspondent & broadcaster.
I cite this personal background because I read this book not as a corporate executive, as are many of Ms. Latz's clients, but as one whose
profession involved speech. I value my four years in college as a speech major, but the curriculum did not include much of the valuable
advice contained in every chapter of this book.
Ms. Latz fills every chapter with advice & guidance. The advice is concise, clear & easy to follow. If the reader follows her advice, there is no way
he or she will not become a better communicator. As with learning to play a musical instrument, & our vocal cords are musical instruments,
the reader must be diligent about practicing the techniques she teaches.
What I like in particular is that she doesn't speak in platitudes, but offers practical advice on communicating. If your speech is clear, it will not only boost your career, but make you more popular socially.
What particularly impressed me wa the advice on how to effectively utilize today's social media. It is not taught in college, but it is vital in
today's fast-moving world. For example, we all find ourselves having to leave voice mail messages. There is nothing more frustrating
& aggravating than listening to a long, rambling incoherent message. And, as Ms. Latz points out, it is annoying, to say the least, to have to
listen to a message several times just to find out who the caller is because the caller either speaks too fast or mumbles it.
The same goes for the caller's phone number. If it unintelligible, many people will give upon disgust & not return the call. I know that I
automatically have warm feelings for a caller whose message is easy to understand. The same thing is true for the message one leaves on his or her own phone. It's an excellent idea to tell the person who is calling you to repeat their number twice.
These are just a few highlights about what impressed me & why I had no hesitation in giving it 5 stars.
