- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2013I knew nothing of James Downey when I downloaded this book and now that I've finished it I can't believe this was his first book! Mr. Downey has a brilliant sci-fi/fantasy career ahead of him. I doubt my review will be read as there are 70 ahead of me, but in the event someone does read this :>) here goes:
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. It was my "recovering from Christmas insanity this weekend" selection on my kindle and it was just perfect for the purpose! I started Saturday and read until I was bleary eyed and finished Sunday.
What I loved most about this book was it's novel plot and unusual technologies. It's hard for an old sci-fi/fantasy buff to find anything truly novel any more. Good books, yes; but novel, no.
I loved the AI "experts" and how they were developed, utilized and the unexpected turn of events involving Seth at the end of the book.
I loved the sweet spirited little clone and her place in the narrative and that the author knew how important an artist would be in the scheme of his story and created an engaging and quirky one with a terrific addiction (another unusual feature of this story).
I loved the diversity of personalities of the primary cast of characters and felt like I knew them and wanted to be part of their experience as soon as we left earth.
I loved the author's creativity in how he created the apocalypse and how he worked the extreme right and left of this country into a melded group of crazies that were believable in their fanaticism.
I very much loved the weaving of deep lines of spirituality throughout the story and how integral it was to the story from beginning to end. Unlike several books I've read that attempted this, Communion of Dreams actually succeeds in making you WONDER! Mr. Downey's writing definitely favors Clarke and evokes the same beautiful but disturbing feelings found in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The pacing of the story wound up being quite good in spite of some early slogging through what wound up being unnecessary time spent on explaining post-apocalyptic family structures and bureaucratic activities. I also wish he had made the "bad guy" less obvious (as in knew who it was from the sentence where he was introduced). There were several characters that could have played the protagonist well and been a genuine surprise. Another item that would likely help get this book moving is a different cover. I understand the imagery now that I've read the book, but definitely think it will keep hard-core sci-fi fans from buying a copy (and people do judge books by their covers).
Lastly, I've read at least 10 books this month that were part of a "series" and really left me frustrated and/or angry because the book didn't have any kind of true ending/resolution--just left you hanging until next book written (and paid for). Communion of Dreams was written in such a way that it could stand on its own; but certainly left this reader ready and waiting for the next book in line: St. Cybi's Well.
Congrats, Mr. Downey, on a terrific first book and on being the kind of person that believes in promoting "collective lyric fantasy." The world needs more of you!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2014I enjoyed the book very much. The start is rather slow, but the pace picks up and draws the reader into an intriguing future world.
I usually seperate my critiques into the writer's craft and the story itself. As to the craft, the author effectively uses descriptions and dialog to convey the story. Technical jargon is prevalent but not to the point of being overwhelming, and the descriptions help keep the reader's interest. Overall it is very well written.
The story is also very interesting. I liked how the author created a future that was similar enough to our own time to be relatable, but sufficiently advanced to let the reader's imagination explore the possibilities. Toward the end some of the events became predictable, and I could not help but find some events to be derivative of other scifi works. The final few chapters seemed a bit rushed, but not in a way that distracted from the overall story.
If you enjoy space exploration and (some) dystopian future fiction, I recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2012Fiction stories are primarily supposed to entertain. Science Fiction stories add extra elements of plausibility to their 'What if?' worlds. Usually this takes the form just-over-the-horizon technology, sometimes inspiring real life to imitate their art; wireless communications, space travel, artificial intelligence to name a few. Communion of Dreams takes this type story telling a step or two beyond that. Beyond the plausible, 'Yeah, that could happen...', beyond the idea of being able to do cool stuff in the physical world because of science and the advancement of technology, and into this author's realm where the not-yet-thought-of is possible in both the physical and METAphysical worlds. What can happen when a man discovers that after nearly destroying itself, there is so much more to Mankind than anyone knew?
It's difficult to describe without giving away too many spoilers, but I'll do my best. His story has a range of breadth from the both intimate and personable relationship the reader develops with our protagonist, to dealing with the emptiness of remote moons where prospectors explore. The writer segue's smoothly from building a team comprised of uniquely talented individuals (some of them with agendas, hidden and otherwise) to the cloak & dagger skills needed when dealing with politicians, fanatics, true believers, or artistes. His story combines elements of many popular genres into a near epic tale. It has elements of Sci-fi, mystery, psychological thriller, political thriller, metaphysical enlightenment, alien contact, artificial intelligence, buddy-drama, and action-adventure. I can easily see this world screen-played into an engaging TV series that appeals to a wide range of people.
I've only read the story once, but plan to revisit it again soon. There's quite a bit going on between the lines and I want to be re-entertained as I pick up on some of the nuances I might've missed the first time around. Good read, can't hardly wait to do it again!

BobReviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 20205.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read
I was very quickly hooked on the story, which is gripping to the end. Though I believe that it was written quite a long time before the Covid-19 pandemic it is interesting to read of similar experiences in a Sci-Fi novel.
It's certainly left me pondering - life, the universe and everything! Highly recommended. Living quite near to one location mentioned in the story also made it more personal. I already have the prequel and look forward to another good read. Thanks!
MareeReviewed in Australia on October 7, 20225.0 out of 5 stars Different in a good way
I was in Canberra when I started reading this book, didn't really have the time to get into it however when I got back to country and had more time it sucked me up like a sponge. Yes really enjoyed it, different, new. I looked forward to getting to it after work. Looking forward to more from James Downey
Ms. E. D. HarrisonReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 20, 20124.0 out of 5 stars Pretty cool!
I really loved the story; the science mixed in with the almost-spiritual. In some places the tech speak was a bit heavy for me, so that's why I didn't give it 5*. For what it was though, I don't really think the writer needed any more depth concerning the characters. Clearly the story was more important and the development of this was shown through Jon's eyes, who I became very fond of. A perfect example of a humane, caring, honest man. And his friendship with Seth (a hologram type thing) was kind of nice.
Lastly, as I was reading I couldn't help but thinking that this book would make a perfectly amazing film! I'd love to see it on screen to know exactly what the author wanted the artifact to look like to the reader, and the setting of Titan and the universe would be an incredible backdrop.
Very nice story, makes a change from the norm. Keep writing, will be looking out for more books by this author :)
The Barefoot BearReviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected - much better!
I was recommended to James Downey's work by a mutual friend who didn't mention the quality of the writing and the scope of the content but simply said Mr Downey was a nice fella and his work was worth reading. Having read it 'cover to cover' in one session, I couldn't agree more.
This is a fascinating exploration of 'what ifs' and possibilities. Yes, its Sci-Fi and, as an historian, not normally my chosen genre, but the depth of Downey's thinking overrode my scepticism. I bought into the plot and really enjoyed the characters.
Maybe next time he is in the UK we'll get a chance to meet. I'd like that.

What a great story. A mix of sci-fi & paranormal, this was just a bit different & I really enjoyed reading it ... in fact I couldn't put down my Kindle! Recommended & please Mr Downey, hurry up with some more good reads.
