HORI Compact Playstand for Nintendo Switch Review
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2018
The HORI Compact Playstand for the Nintendo Switch is adjustable to 30, 50 and 60 degree angles; it has two dowels that fit securely into slots on the bottom of the Nintendo Switch console to prevent it from sliding once placed on the stand. Using the Switch on the adjustable playstand is certainly an upgrade over the built-it kickstand on the backside, on top of allowing the system to be charged while gaming, the raised height is also a more ergonomic setup and rubber placements around the stand keep your Switch from accidentally being scratched while in use—It also has small rubber feet on the bottom for stability. It folds up easily and snaps securely shut for transportation; it can be used as a stand for other portable systems(3DS, PS Vita), phones or small enough tablets as well. The dimensions of the unit are 6.4 inches long, 0.7 inches thick, 3.5 inches wide and weighs about 6 ounces. For me, It's much more enjoyable playing my Switch with this setup than using the built-in kickstand. While I'm waiting for work to process at my PC, It's nice having my Switch charged up and ready to go on the stand. The build quality is great for an adjustable piece of plastic and at only $12.99, what's not to like?

Ok, the purchase of this all started from some blog article I read somewhere where a guy was daydreaming of being able to play his Switch while laying down, with the unit resting on his stomach/chest and his hands resting further down by his waist. I know. Like...how lazy can you get? Amirite?? So obviously I wanted to emulate this man's plan exactly because it can take a toll on your neck after hours of playing Zelda propped on a pillow on your stomach. I mean, no one needs that kind of suffering. Well, this does not work to a 5-star level on that front, I'm afraid, but it works well enough for in-bed laziness that I'll give it 4. And if you're asking why don't I just play it connected to a TV like a civilized human, well that's because I like to play at night when my kids are finally asleep, so I'm left with only being able to play in my bedroom with the door closed lest my hoard of monkeys hear the music and wonder why they can't stay up all night and play too. Plus, by that time my husband has usually already commandeered the TV to watch Overwatch Twitch streams. The unit is compact, folds down flat, and is easy to store. On the long-term durability and strength scale, it could use some work. It prevents it from slipping down in the traditional just-prop-it-up-against-something method, and also elevates it a little for better viewing. However, if your goal was just to have a semi-stable unit to prop the Switch up on an actual flat surface and play, this is a great solution for not a lot of money.

Compact and lightweight, definitely serves its purpose. If you plan to use your Switch on an airplane (the absolute best place to play a Switch, by the way), I think a stand like this is basically a requirement. It's ten times better than playing in handheld mode, using the flimsy integrated kickstand, or trying to get the screen to the right viewing angle some other way.
My only complaint is that I wish it would lock in position, since it can be easy to nudge it with your hand.

The foldable stand can prop up the Switch at 30, 50, and 60 degree angles. When the Switch is placed horizontally like you would in any other dock, you can still charge the console without issue since the bottom port is fully accessible. While you can of course just use the cable from the official dock to charge the Switch in this stand, the Cable Matters USB-C cable is inexpensive and has worked well for me so that I never have to disturb my primary dock setup.
While I admit my primary use case is rather specific, I definitely anticipate using this stand for other Switch games. It's easy to fold and store, and is inexpensive enough not to worry about. It's definitely recommended if you need a portable stand that can also accommodate your Switch in vertical mode.
Pluses:
- Functional
- Compact
- Inexpensive
Minuses:
- None!
Summary:
A simple, yet effective portable Nintendo Switch stand.

In looking for a good stand for my Nintendo Switch to play some of the vertically oriented arcade games from the excellent NAMCO MUSEUM, I came across the HORI Compact Playstand. Superficially, it seemed to tick all the necessary boxes: performance, price, and compactness. In practice, it definitely ticked all those boxes.

A perfect little handy item for the Switch on the go. It's perfect to keep my Switch charged while at the office during my down time. The built in kickstand simply doesn't allow charging while playing and that's a shame. It can be adjusted to 3 angles as well. Easily folds to fit in any bag or pocket.

Super compact and lightweight. Feels cheap. But is definitely capable of holding your switch firm and steady. No rocking when playing with volume, power, removing game cartridges, stand locks Switch into place so it cant slide out left or right. Multitude of different viewing angles. And best of all can charge your switch

Not much to complain about here, it's plastic and hinges. It holds the switch and has all the right cutouts and stuff for the cords/vents. It has notches to give it different viewing angles. My only gripe is that I expected it to be closer to the 8-10 dollar range, as it's only plastic, but I think it's still worth the price compared to other options. It works great with the Mumba case, which means it'll probably fit most any case, and it's thin enough to fit in bigger carrying cases. It's nice for playing desktop while charging.

Useful and well made

HORI is always the to-go-brand for Nintendo accessories, I've never been disappointed. I'm buying their products since the Nintendo DS launch.
The stand is well made, there are rubber pads at the bottom to keep it steady and some rubber pads on the "shelf" mount to keep the Switch in place (and don't scratch it).
You can adjust the stand to several angles to find your best orientation to play your favourite games.
I usually use it when the main TV is busy and I want to have a quick session with Zelda, using the Pro controller for max performance.
I got the black one but there's also a red one "Mario" edition but the features are essentially the same.
It's a useful add-on for your Switch if you prefer to play with the Pro controller and want a secure place to put your Switch (and avoid slipping and other issues).
Highly recommended.

HORI Swich PlayStand - Charge and Play in TableTop mode

Perfect solution to an obvious problem of the Switch - playing in TableTop mode whilst charging!
Used for when multiple people are playing Mario Kart on one Switch, and works perfectly.
Build quality is good for the price, and the multiple angles of the stand is a great feature.
Well recommended.

It's a stand it works for switch OLED screen, mobile phones as well its just a stand not bad studiness when used on glass table it works its not broke, there are some flat foot pads build into the plastic, what more can I say?
I guess if it came with a built in with a high powered power bank for the OLED switch then you wouldn't need a cable which to be honest bends slighty at the bottom but its not a deal breaker the design looks cool and hori do make decent products vs value for money, but in this day and age you need to think ahead. A power bank should be the first thing you make these days when making things that hold electronic devices.

What can I say? It's a piece of plastic, which does a lot less than I thought. And yes, I should have researched it more before buying.
Essentially there is a flap at the back of the main part, much like the back of a picture frame. It adjusts to 3 heights, just by moving the flap to 1 of 3 positions - none of which are very different and all of which are low. Once you position the switch onto the main part, which is a little flap that pops out, there are two little raised dots, which fit into the little holes, either side of the charging port. No, I hadn't noticed then at first either! Lining these up is tricky and it's easy to overlook them. So now the Switch is sitting on a ledge of sorts. There are two small extensions on the ledge, which you would think would be adjustable - you know, to tighten around the Switch? Well, they're not and as such, are pretty useless tbh.
All in all I'm unimpressed.
Sure it's 'portable' as it's all flaps that fold down, but don't try and move your Switch when it's 'mounted', as it will merely fall to the floor.
A waste of money. Get the cheaper one if you can. Looks like it does the same job for half the price.
