Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This adult sequel to MacAlister's YA paranormals Got Fangs? and Circus of the Darned follows Francesca, ex-girlfriend and perforce soul mate of the ultra-hot vampire Benedikt, as she tries to live her own life. After rescuing her roommate from Norse god Loki's evil minions, Fran heads to the GothFaire in Germany in search of her missing mother. When she finds Ben with evil Naomi, she flips out. While resolving her emotional issues with Ben, she stumbles on one of her mother's secrets and meets Ben's shape-shifting brother, David, who has problems of his own. European myths get a workout in Fran's wisecracking narrative, at its best when her lusty Viking ghost guardians are on the scene. The pace is so fast and the sex so hot that the reader scarcely notices the lack of emotional, setting, or character depth. (Nov.) (c)

From Booklist

Fran was a young witch of 16 when she became Ben’s Beloved, bound to him by fate to save his immortal soul—as if puberty isn’t hard enough. Over the next five years, she fights hard for space, and time, to grow into her own person, pushing Ben away. But when her mother goes missing, she returns to GothFaire to find her, only to find Ben in another woman’s arms. Having not only to face Ben’s secrets, but also a vengeful Norse god, will Fran be able to find out what has really happened to her mother, and to her own heart, in time? Though at times the zaniness in this newest installment in the Dark Ones series can feel overwhelming, MacAlister delivers another tonic dose of her signature blend of steamy sexual tension and touching romance. --Nina C. I have read most of katie macalister's books and liked the humor in it. the silliness of the books were funny and the characters' adulthood wasn't questionable. In this book, I felt like I was reading a racy young adult novel. The jokes in the book were over the top like she was trying too hard to make readers laugh but it came off as immature. i rolled my eyes so many times reading this book. This book is a spin off from her young adult series and she should have kept it there.

In the Company of Vampires follows Fran as she returns to the Circus of the Darned and is reunited with her teenage flame Ben. Fran's mother is missing and the hysterical Viking ghosts have reappeared forcing Fran to return to the goth faire and forcing her to deal with Ben the hunky dark one who she is eternally linked to.

This book is written in Katie MacAlisters classic style which readers will either love or hate. The writing is silly and laugh out loud absurd and full of steamy sex and crazy co-stars.

I have not read the previous YA stories about Ben and Fran and felt like I was playing catchup the ENTIRE book. I don't like to read too much about a book before I read it because I want to be surprised by what happens. I wish I would've read reviews on this book before I read it. This was NOT a Dark One's novel. This was a continuation of her YA fiction. None of the other previous characters from Dark One's novels were around and I feel a little cheated. She did not lay out the steps of becoming a Beloved like she has in other novels and I just didn't feel like this fit into the series.

Although it was good to catch up with Fran and Benedikt, I thought the story was a bit over the top in silliness. Also, it didn't really have much of a finite ending. I know there a quite a few books in the "Dark Ones" series, maybe there is something out there that wraps up the loose ends of this one.

This is #8 in the Dark Ones series, and an all grown up continuation of the Goth Faire series under the pen name Katie Maxwell. This book takes place approximately 6 years after the events in Circus of the Darned. Fran has now finished college and is making plans to join her Dad's internet company. She hasn't seen Ben in several years, and in fact, had told him about a year prior that they were done and over.

What I really liked about this book was the return of the all the great secondary characters from the first 2 books. They really provided quite a bit of extra comic relief. Additionally, there were tie in characters from other books in the Dark Ones universe. I like following characters as they move from book to book in the series, even if they are the main characters.

As far as Fran and Ben's relationship goes, it starts out rather rocky. I will try not to give any big spoilers, but there was a moment when I really wondered if Fran and Ben were actually going to get together. Thankfully Fran's character has truly grown and matured in the years since the YA books and she actually listened to the explanation and trusted in her Dark One. Though I will say, that Ben should have spent a bit more time with the groveling.

Overall this was a good book and a great wrap up to the the YA books. Katie MacAlister left us with enough loose ends to spin a couple more Dark One books, but enough resolution to see that Fran and Ben were headed firmly into their HEA.

I have been reading her Dark Ones series for a long time. This is a refreshing plot in it. The continuation of a relationship from another novel that allows the reader to see how it began and developed.

I couldnt get into this book. I ended up not finishing reading it. I didnt like the female main character, found her annoying. I did however love the vikings & thier humor. They were halrious and carried the book for me. I wanted to keep reading to see what they would say or do but thats not good when they arent the main people. I dont know if its just this book or if all her characters are like this one.

I loved this one its one of my favorites and has been re-read often.

I think this can be read as a stand alone but it is nice to read the first two stories of Ben and Fran from the Confessions Of A Vampire's Girlfriend (Got Fangs and Circus Of The Darned)where Fran is only Seventeen and is a part of a GothFaire, I know cool right!!!!

If not for the continuation of Ben and Fran's story you NEED to read this one for the Vikings they are beyond hilarious and we all need more characters like these.

I am never not once disappointed with a Katie MacAlister story I know will get Love, Some Sexy Times and of course Humor.

All up this is a perfect addition to the Dark Ones Series. If you havent picked up a book by Katie MacAlister you are missing out big time, her novels are fun and full of humor.
