- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2015Thank you, thank you, thank you -- Eric, Shiggy, and Brent!!! This book fills a niche, complementing the other fun, engaging, challenging, & useful books in the Compelling Conversations series. English as a Second/Foreign Language teachers everywhere (in this case, those working with Japanese-speaking students) will immediately be able to employ this book in the classroom (and beyond) with fantastic results! Unique features such as"Tell me about Japan - in English" and "Photographs to start conversations" make Compelling Conversations - Japan an instant winner.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2015My student enjoys the vocabulary and answering the questions since it gives her confidence. The pronunciation drills are particular to Japanese students
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2015I've really enjoyed using the original in my classes, and this edition is a great way to focus the content to a more specific group of students. The students really connect with the questions and have a strong desire to respond, which is particularly great for Japanese students who are not as accustomed to speaking exercises in the classroom. I particularly like the Search and Share exercises and the Pronunciation Practice. There are even some activities that provide a good scaffolding for students who might fall below the high-intermediate level.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2015When I taught ESL to high school students in a summer program at UCLA, I used COMPELLING CONVERSATIONS and found it very innovative and fun to work with for teachers. I look forward to purchasing this one and seeing what the author and his fellow conversationalists come up with now.

英会話クラスでこの本を使っているので買ったのですが初級レベルの私には難しく単語を訳しまくっています。
drichiReviewed in Japan on July 26, 20221.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is near worthless
I have used earlier versions, and this one pretty much replicates the topics, but adds additional activities for those who need them. The problem with the KIndle version is there there is no longer a table of contents, just a list of "Sections." You'll have no idea what the 70 plus sections are about so you will have to go through page by page to find a unit you may want to use. Absolutely terrible idea. I paid ¥500, but would not pay ¥5 for it now.
WolfeReviewed in Japan on June 15, 20164.0 out of 5 stars A good conversation book with a focus on Japan
I use this book for a casual weekly group lesson at a cafe and I am very happy with this book so far. Although it is at an intermediate level, I can still modify it for my mixed level class so that the lower level students are not left out. It based on interesting topic and it has a lot of questions and quotations in each chapter. The quotations, or famous quotes, make the book a little harder for the lower level, but we don't go over everyone. The only complaint is the quality of the paper and the printing on the inside (the covers are fine). It looks like a poor quality photocopy. This doesn't limit its functionality though and is merely cosmetic.
