Palladium Compendium of Weapons, Armour and Castles.
An excellent tome covering real-world ancient and medieval weapons, armour and castles (as the title says).
Weapon differences and function are explained well. Weapon lists appear quite exhaustive. Weapon damage is provided in a format suited to easy adaptation to the Palladium game system (though, curiously, NOT in an identical format)
Armour function and design are explained. Armour lists are likewise exhaustive and accompanied by excellent line drawings. Armour ratings likewise can be easily converted (Armour Rating vs cut, chop, thrust and impact are all provided, but no SDC values). Again, the format is not quite identical to the palladium system.
The castles section describes the purpose and function of a castle very well. The section covers the vast majority of real-world castles. Each castle has a small layout map included and is illustrated with an excellent line drawing.
Overall this is a great addition to any RPG. Matthew Balent has an obvious love for and a deep understanding of his subject.

This helpfull tome provides both an accurate explination of how a castle's renewable set of traits (and maps) influence the domain around there walls, as well as seige weapons and eventual evolution of gunpowder (alchemy). A S.D.C. setting unless paired with RIFTS conversion books designed to convert any palladium charecter type to other settings. That permits S.D.C. magic designed to cast environment magic spells that do not really do 'damage', Tactics, when compared with the 'cherry bomb' of RIFTs world M.D.C. spellcasting.

If it were not for the pixtures I would throw this piece of crap away. Totally incompatible with 2nd edition Palladium books. If you want to use any of the weapons you have to rewrite the stats and so on. Total waste of money.

If you wish to know the history of Earthly weapons and armor, this is your source. While none are extensively detailed, it gives one great place to start.

This is a decent book in some ways and an excellent one in others. It has an exhaustive and very complete listing of primitive weapons and armor and it is very complete covering some very obscure and hardly known or researched weapons, it misses some though, no entry for a Solarion for instance and some are incorrect, the material on the Pilum is arguably wrong/outdated for instance and some of the weapon statistics are based on outdated and conjectural information from 30 plus years ago which we now know is wrong as well.
Historical background information is scanty, incomplete and sometimes incorrect. I don't hate this book ( some sections are incredibly well done and useful) I just think it could have been better, some of the weapon depictions look like they were illustrated by an amateur, while the illustrations of figures wearing and using the weapons and armor is more professionally done, however some of the chosen subjects are a bit bizarre, and many of the best known and most famous types of soldier which should have been obvious choices for illustration were not used, the choices seem poorly considered, e.g. who cares what a French Archer of the guard looked like when they were always getting curb-stomped by English Longbowmen...wouldn't that have been a better choice? Another drawing shows a very generic and boring looking knight wearing armor that does not fit the period his weapons would have been from, wouldn't a French Gendarme or a Polish Hussar been a better choice? But its a good accompanying volume for the Palladium RPG.

If you're a fantasy writer, then this book is a must!! It goes into great details about the weapons used in the middle ages, which we can transfer over to our fantasy writings. It also goes into great details about armor, and not just about Knights, and castles. Don't type another word until you study this book!!!

The sections on armor is very comprehensive. The drawings of the weapons are a bit crude, but there are quite a lot of them from all over the world. There is also a section on castles and fortifications with some very nice 3-D drawings.
Finally, there is a system that could be used for a roleplaying game or tactical level wargame.
Not bad, not bad at all! = )
