Complete AR-15/M16 Sourcebook: What Every Shooter Needs to Know Paperback – January 1, 2002

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

This carefully researched revised and updated edition of The AR-15/M16 Sourcebook offers fresh insight into why the AR-15/M16 rifle remains a favorite of soldiers, law enforcement officials, civilian shooters and self-defense experts. In it, Duncan Long takes another look at the history of the "black-rifle" from the bureaucratic blunders and military infighting that ruined its reliability during the Vietnam War to the modifications that transformed it into the most reliable weapon in the world. He also examines the many military and custom spinoffs of the firearm, including an invaluable listing of its various models, supplemented by an impressive collection of photos and illustrations. In addition, he covers grenade launchers, SAW versions, and experimental weapons systems and even gives a detailed assessment of the OICW and other firearms now being tested as replacements for the U.S. military's M16 and M4 carbine. An entire section of the book is devoted to the very newest accessories for the AR-15, with a hard look at which ones will enhance its capabilities-and which could get the shooter killed. In addition to offering advice on improving an AR-15 rifle, picking the best ammunition for it, and ensuring its reliability, Long presents simple techniques for creating a one-of-a-kind exotic weapon built around this rifle through the selection of parts and accessories now on the market (and where to get them). Finally, the book provides complete instructions on how to field-strip, detail strip, troubleshoot, and assemble an AR-15. Whether you want a weapon you can rely on to get you out of a tight spot or wish to build a super accurate target version of the AR-15, this is the most complete and up-to-date resource available on what many consider to be the best rifle ever made.

Additionally, he's ghostwritten over a dozen titles for TV, radio, and stage celebrities.

Some of Long's technical manuals can be found in the private libraries of the CIA, US Marines, FEMA, the FBI's FTU (Firearms Training Unit), and other US agencies. Excerpts from his books and technical drawings have even appeared in US Congressional hearings.

As an illustrator Long has created cover and interior illustrations for HarperCollins, PS Publishing (UK), Byron Preiss/ibooks, Pocket Books, Fort Ross, American Media, Delirium Books, Ballistic Media, Mermaid Books, Swimming Kangaroo Books, and others. And the reviewer at 3D Millennium (M3 Corp., Inc.) wrote about Long's collected works, "To call him a prolific artist would be understatement, at best. Get yourself a snack and settle back while Duncan takes you on a wild ride through worlds only he has dreamt of."

i had this shipped from amazon.com to manila, and totally loved it. there are so much variants of the M16/AR15 and it gets really hard to keep track of all . this guide tells you the make ,where to find it, who has it, and when it was made. i also learned so much from this book regarding the "markings" of an M16 and what makes yours special. i am a true loveer of the M16 rifle, and am very proud to own this book. now, i have learned many things which i haven't had the slightest idea of, before i bought this book! this truly is a good buy, if you want to authenticate, modify, and just plainly admore your M16 rifle

Interesting. Gives you all the history about the development of the AR, which is pretty darn interesting. You'll find out why Armalite, the inventor of the AR-15, never made any serious money with the design and Colt did. At times, the history portion of this book is interesting enough to be a novel: Armalite invents cool gun, Armalite can't capitalize on it for one reason or another... SEEMingly due to no fault of their own.

The part about variations of the weapons system would be interesting to collectors, I suppose. I skipped it.

The brief sections about tear-down and cleaning are just that.

Overall, a reasonably good book for any new AR enthusiast.

There was so much stuff that I didn't know and even somethings I did, but didn't think they'd be in here.......they were. WOW great book for EVERY GUN OWNER AND ESPECIALLY AR-15, AR-10 AND AR's OWNERS in general. Yes. I highly recommend this book.

This was essential to me, both for learning the workings of a new AR-15, but also it's maintenance and background. Good addition to your library.

A very thorough book on the AR family of firearms. A little dated, though. Many current makers are not represented and it could use an appendix to cover these. Some issues like the "danger of excessive headspace" are a little overdone but few people ever read Hatcher's Notebook to learn the truth about headspace.

The book is a pretty good book about ARs. I had seen an older edition of the book and since that time really wanted a copy of it. I was elated to find this newer version, thinking it might have later and updated material. I was not very happy when I found some of the earlier pictures and material had been left out. The earlier versions are indeed a lot better than this edition. I was sorry I bought the book.

As the title implies, this is a very comprehensive look at AR-15/M16 history and design.
Plenty of detail on how this conventional platform came to be the giant it is today and should be prerequisite to owning one. Having the ability to look almost any information up on the Web, it was refreshing to see a text such as this.
Go buy it.
