Great book if you're interested in local, small-scale agriculture. This is for anybody who's ever dreamed of living on a farm or sustaining their own food source more as a hobby then a way of life. I wanted to raise some chickens but I wasn't ready to quit my job and move to the country. This book showed me how simple (emphasis on the difference between simple and easy.) I got the down low quickly and easily on breed and location and was able to assess based on the property I had available. Nothing can replace the knowledge of an individual with actual experience raising animals, but this comes close.

The Complete Beginner's Guide to Raising Small Animals: Everything You Need to Know About Raising Cows, Sheep, Chickens, Ducks, Rabbits, and More is just that: a mini encyclopedia with information about all of these animals. Each section on the various animals starts out with an interesting introduction on the history of the particular animal and its relationship with humans. (The goat was one of the earliest animals to be domesticated). Then the book methodically covers everything you need to know about keeping that particular animal, including health issues to be aware of and best methods for housing and husbandry. A fun middle section includes color photos and fun facts about the different species (did you know that chickens are the closest living relatives of the Tyrannosaurus Rex?) Definitely a good, thorough book for anyone considering their own farm.

This was a gift to my wife for christmas. She is very interested in raising small animals in the future on our future farm. This seems to be a great introduction into the care/feeding/welfare of small animals such as goats, pigs, and chickens. I think she was very pleased!

Good information, but felt the sheep chapter was lacking. The chicken chapter was full of very good advice and plans to build a small chicken coop, not the size i need. Needed something larger for free range coop.
Overall good.
